<p>I stayed in Mohonk about 10 years ago for a corporate event. I found the rooms small and in need of a makeover. The exterior is unique and the area is wonderful for hiking, but it was no where near the luxury of the Mount Washington hotel and the food was an institutional buffet.</p>
<p>True. Mohonk is a “classic old hotel”. It’s elegant, but a simple ways. (In 1985, there were no TVs in the rooms. Not sure about things these days). It is not posh/modern like high end hotels or snazzy cruise ships.</p>
<p>Mohonk rooms are mixed; most have been renovated but they are simple and classic. The best are the Tower rooms with fireplace. The whole experience is one of the best anywhere, and I’ve been to some of the most famous/expensive hotels in the world. The amenities are wonderful, the hiking superb and with the relatively new spa facility it makes a wonderful weekend getaway. They do have a website so you should google it.</p>
<p>If you want something in Manhattan there are a few in addition to The Plaza but they are very expensive, much more than Mohonk even without the food and services included.</p>
<p>Oh and be careful about choosing anything along the Jersey shore, it may not be standing after Sandy.</p>

<p>OK…there is the link for the Mountain View Grand in Whitefield NH. It is gorgeous.</p>
<p>A grand hotel is Sky top lodge at about an hour a way. It is on many thousands of acres including ski lift, lake, golf course etc… Sagamore is also nice but further away in lake George area. The cranwell isn’t as big and grand, definitely stay in the mansion for much nicer rooms, lots to do in the berkshires though and probably the lowest priced. Mohonk has a nice spa and beautiful property but meh food and dinky rooms.</p>
<p>Re: Jersey shore–Cape May is fine–was minimally touched by Sandy.</p>

<p>Garden City Hotel in Garden City, Long Island. It’s hardly more than 1/2 hour from NYC in a lovely town. They have a grand lobby, dining room and a high tea. The old-fashioned hotel from the movies you’re talking about. The food is good.</p>
<p>Caveat: I’ve never been in the guest rooms, but I’m sure they’re on their site.</p>
<p>Saratoga Springs has some lovely old hotels and it’s a nice place to visit for the weekend. Lovely shops, galleries and excellent restaurants. </p>
