Hey guys,

I plan on applying to several top schools (at least one or two of hyps or other reputable universities and LAC’s) and several lower ranked schools (fishing for scholarships, tulane and case western for example) next year. I have good sats (which I am looking to improve), great gpa, and a good list of ECs.

My only problem is that while I will graduate with 6 AP classes, I am taking them all in my senior year. Due to a Rotary Year Abroad this year and the fact that my school only offers AP classes your junior and senior year and only about 10 or 11 in total it was impossible for me to take them before next year.

How much will this hurt me? These schools will see I’ve crammed in a ton of AP courses but they won’t see examples of actual success in any (I do at least plan on sending my first or second report card grades of my senior year to show them something). Will they understand how annoyingly complicated it was to fit In an year abroad and 6 APs and graduate in only 4 years?

also on a side note, but if anyone feels like throwing an answer in, how much will a rotary year abroad count for? I personally think its been the best experience of my life and plan on writing essays on it for my application. (I also raised most of the money for my trip myself so maybe that will count as well)

If anything, Rotary and your essay about it will only help. It’s a solid reason for not taking extra AP classes. I can’t give you a “chance”, per se, as you don’t have any statistics or colleges listed, but I’m sure the admissions officers will be understanding of your situation.

I’m in a similar boat! I got really sick one year and because my grades dropped so much I wasn’t allowed to take any AP courses my junior year so I’m trying to cram them all in next year (senior year)
I’m freaking out as well but my counselor assured me that they understand, especially if you explain your situation

yea, I’m looking at a couple of hyps (princeton at least), then maybe sunys like stony brook and binghamton some LACS like swarthmore and brandeis, maybe upenn, and tulare, casewestern ect. for scholarships. Im just worried the higher level universities have so many quality apps they won’t even have to give my situation any consideration.

I completely feel ya thats exactly how I feel, I think I might actually write my essay about being sick though so they’ll HAVE to at least know what happened. Have other people from your school applied to those schools and gotten in? Because if so they must know that your school has that policy.
Also, all of the more selective schools, I’m applying to those as LATE as possible. I would love to do ED at vandy but I’m not going to apply until January so they can see at least 1 semester of my AP grades. Maybe you should consider doing the same?

I don’t plan on a single early decision yet because I want to raise my sat’s to at least above 700 in math (680 doesn’t cut it for certain science/math oriented schools and I’m looking to major in the sciences). So at least they will see my ap grades a bit.

They still won’t see any exam grades though which are the real test, for all they know I could have a grade-inflating teacher.

also completely off topic, 15k rpi medal, found out this morning, made my day.
