My C has been discouraged by his school college adviser who said that there is a very low chance (if it it is not entirely impossible) for anyone (no matter how you are strong and competitive) from our school (even our neighbor schools) can be accepted by Pitt GAP in medicine in the year of 2015-2016 because one student from our school was accepted by Pitt GAP in medicine in the year of 2014-2015. The unspoken reason is that Pitt GAP in medicine wants to have the brightest students from different places and also spread out the prestigious program in Pitt in everywhere. Can anyone know something inside in this program?
Five years ago, D2’s class had the only two in-state students get into the GAP program. I believe that Pitt selected 10 applicants for the GAP program that year. They certainly were highly qualified, but those were two GAP’ers who obviously graduated from the very same high school in the very same year.
@QuietType, thanks for your information. 2 GAP/ers from the same HS in the same year…
It is very competitive to be selected for GAP from what I have seen, but even harder to qualify for the required 3.75 GPA once in the program.
So I wouldn’t worry what the GC says. If your son has what they are looking for he will get it, if not he can still take advantage of all the opportunities Pitt offers for a premed and take MCAT and apply to med school.
@mommdc, many thanks for your insights and suggested pathway
