Wesleyan University is unbelievable! Orientation has opened my eyes to fantastic horizons along the wide-ranging human spectrum. I have met people from all over the world and of all types–from the girl hailing from the Bahamas to the transgendered student who identifies as neither a male nor a female. I truly feel that I’ve been blessed with the opportunity of a lifetime, in which people will accept you BOTH for who you are (one half of your identity, which includes your personality and origin) and for what you identify as (the other half of your identity, which includes your gender identity, race, and sexual orientation). No one harbors a desire to harm others or to allow judgment to override understanding through interactions; in other words, no one closes himself/herself/zerself off to other people simply because of preconceived notions garnered from a social vehicle like Facebook. Okay, let’s be realistic-- Wesleyan is a place where people smoke and drink, among other forms of substance abuse–but are there many secular institutions in America that have completely sober students? Nope. With this aside, Wesleyan is, once again, fantastic! There are males and females that willingly crossdressed for the Foss Cross party last night. (Oh, by the way, my class [The Class of 2011] closed MoCon last night with the last event ever to take place there.) Of course, Foss Cross wasn’t for everyone, which is why Wesleyan also hosted a coffeehouse event on Nicolson Terrace. As you can see, Wesleyan offers something for every top student that is accepted. There is something so rich, so fundamental, and so profound at Wesleyan that you can’t find at HYP, Brown, Columbia, or any of the Ivy League schools, and that’s simply Wesleyan. Wesleyan is a domain of intellectual pursuit, individual exploration, acceptance (and not just tolerance), integrity, respect, diversity, friendliness, social interaction, and so much more. I am immensely proud of my university, and cannot see myself anywhere else, not even at Vassar or UChicago, my former first choices. Therefore, if you want to apply to Wesleyan, I would absolutely encourage (if not urge) you to do so. There is something beautiful about this campus–not only the Usdan Terrace (which, by the way, has amazing food) or the castle-like structures that stand at the bottom of Foss Hill, but also every single student. As a native New Yorker and current New Jerseyite, I have always preferred an urban environment, such as that of the city (NYC), to anything else; even so, I feel that I have finally found my true home away from home. Wesleyan is one of the most selective universities in the nation, but if you make it in, you are attending one of the finest universities ever founded in this nation. God speed to all and good luck!
