a d in calculus

Hi, I am a UCI hopeful with a 3.98 gpa, and I am involved in many clubs and i have a parttime job as a receptionist at an animal hospital. This year i i decided to take a risk and take ap calc ab in senior year. I later on realized in the year that my teacher is the most difficult teacher ever and his teaching skills are not compatible with me at all. I am not blaming him, it’s just that I cannot register his ways of teaching the ways I do with other teachers =/ I received a D as a 1st semester grade, and I am terrible depressed… I am now stuck with the decision whether to drop the class or not. Would it look worse if I were to drop the class or, possibly, fail 2nd semester calc?

pls help
all i want is uci

If you’re questioning whether you should drop it, then you should probably drop it. AP Calculus isn’t easy, and it comes across as difficult to many people.

but, Would it look better if i drop it rather than failing it again?

It will be marked as “W” (withdrawal) on your transcript. Depends on whether you feel prepared to do better this semester- if you think you can get higher than a C+, then keep the course.

^ I agree. The only way to do better is to work really hard. If you’re willing to put in a lot of work and effort then keep the class. Dropping a class isn’t always a bad thing. It’s not whether it’ll look better, it’s about how comfortable you are and willingness to keep pushing. Good luck, and try not to stress over it.

Read this carefully:
[UCI - Office of Admissions and Relations with Schools](http://www.admissions.uci.edu/maa_uci/freshman_contract.html)
You need to get at least a 3.0 GPA for your senior year, and Ds don’t look good. You can get your admission rescinded. Dropping a class doesn’t look too good either - you’ll be taking a less rigorous schedule which they don’t like (part B of the 4th bullet point).

Also, keep in mind that in college whether the teacher connects with your learning style or not doesn’t matter - you need to pass your classes with a good grade. I know from experience that several math professors at UCI don’t teach very good and/or have a difficult time speaking English - however most of the students in the class will learn the subject anyway.

=/ so either way both ways look bad…

am i hopeless then…

You really can’t change the past now, so I think it’s best that you stick with the class.

"am i hopeless then… "
No, get a better grade this semester to show improvement. I don’t think one D will get your admission revoked and going from a D to an A or a B will certainly help you.

If you think you can get a B or higher keep it. If not, drop it.

By “hopeful” do you mean you’ve been admitted already? How are your other grades? Can you maintain the 3.0 requirement with a final grade of C-D in math? If so, just buckle down and do the best you can. UCI isn’t going to rescind for one less than stellar grade in your senior year.

no, by hopeful i mean that that is my dream school. my other grades are great, all a’s except for a b in spanish, but it’s calculus thats just pulling my gpa down =/ will uc’s understand that calculus is just not meant for a student like me?
