Today is Dr. King’s holiday. Here is a segment of a holiday event in NYC yesterday. First up is Presiding Bishop Michael Curry of the Episcopal Church. He delivered a sermon at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, and he spoke at the funeral for former President George H.W. Bush.
I love to take MLK day to try and reverse the whitewashing of his legacy. So here’s some reminders about him.
He:
-was a socialist
-was vehemently anti-capitalism
-believed in a radical restructuring of the American political and economic systems
-was anti-militarism
-was anti-imperialism/empire
-believed in global solidarity among the working class
He was a radical, not a moderate unifier.

He was also an imperfect human being. Being a teen in the '60’s the importance of civil rights is profound. Having an icon for a rallying point was tremendously useful. The “I have a dream” phrase was so much more important than his exact vison. Our local paper had some interesting points, such as his name change because of his father circa 1934. It has been enough years past events that historians can sort through events.
