a few questions regaurding dedication

I have been in a Make a difference organization for two years now. Sophmore year I was a member, this year (Junior) I became the President. This was a competitive and comitting position. I am enjoying it but, I have to much of an interest in my subjects and I want to devote more time to them. Currently I am taking three AP’s and need more time with them frankly. I was considering not running again next year (and likely quitting track and model UN, because I want to spend more time studying for my classes; I also am a voracious reader and frankly havn’t really had any time to read anything lately) Would in be in my best interest to do this, I know UofC is particular about your EC’s. Honestly I have average grades. Roughly B average. Up until now I have been very serious about the social sciences and have taken all the AP’s and advanced classes in my schools social science department with pretty good grades. Lately I have really developed a strong interest in the natural and physcial sciences. (althought i definitely don’t have mastery I will probably end up getting a C in chemistry this semester. But Im determined to improve.) Next year I plan on taking a few AP sciences (I was always good in Bio) like AP Bio AP CHem PHyscis B and maybe Environmental Science. I know I can handle the load, but, how would U ofC look at this sudden change in interest senior year? any advice or elaboration would be appreciated!

Dropping all your activities does not look good, but in the end succeeding in your classes is more important than your ECs. I would advise you to reconsider your schedule, though. You shouldn’t have a schedule so time consuming that you can’t spare time for even one EC that you enjoy. Why, for example, do you want to take AP Chem next year if you have a C in chem now? You will likely struggle significantly in that class, anyway, let alone with two or three other AP scienes.

I do want to tell you that your grades don’t sound high enough to make you very competitive at the U of C, particularly with a lack of ECs. I’m not trying to discourage you, and you should of course try as hard as you can in your classes and put together as good an application as you can. You will want to concentrate on your essay, and you may benefit from starting to work on and think about the essay this summer. You should also research and visit other schools. What are you looking for in a college? I can try to suggest a couple, if you want.

The U of C model UN team is very active, in case you want to continue it in college. If not, still think about continuing track. You’re going to have a tough schedule next year, and physical activity can work to keep you physically healthy and keep your spirits up.
