a few questions..

As a UC, does Berkeley even glance at your freshman grades??

Also, if you are trying to get in as a linguistics major, what ECs do you recommend to stand out when you are submitting your resume??

Thanks!

  1. Nope! Unless you failed classes your freshman year, you should be fine.
  2. I don't actually know any linguistics majors, but I would have the same advice for any freshman. Ultimately, ECs outside of work experience don't really matter all that much when you're applying to jobs. So I would get work experience! Try going through work study or the campus job portal Callisto and find something that you can juggle during the semester, like 10-15 hours a week. If you're only getting offers from unpaid positions, then you may have to take something like that. Bottom line, if you're looking for a legit internship by the time you finish your freshman year, it would be great to have 2-3 work experiences under your belt.

UC’s do not use Freshman grades for their UC GPA calculation, but they do check to see if you have completed the a-g course requirements needed to apply to the UC’s and if you passed these classes.
