a few questions..

First – is there accessible wireless internet throughout Carleton’s dorms?

Second – current students, how good would you say the career/academic advising at Carleton is? Do you feel that you are getting a lot of help in thinking what you will do after college and in choosing appropriate courses? Do you have any idea how Carleton’s advising might compare to that of other colleges?

Yes.

The trick to getting a good adviser is choosing a freshman seminar fall term that is taught by a professor with a good reputation. Freshman who take the fall seminars are almost always paired with the profs teaching those courses for their first two years of college. Once you choose your major, you are assigned to a prof in that department (assuming that your freshman/sophomore adviser does not teach there).

I can’t really speak to what happens when you’re thinking about life post-Carleton, but I can say that my adviser has been very supportive and helpful when it comes to my decisions to apply for a study abroad program and a selective on-campus job. He has been extremely generous with his time as far as writing recommendations, meeting during the day, and so on.

I think the worst case scenario would be getting a rather distant prof (though since it’s Carleton, there aren’t many of those). The only thing you’re required to do with your adviser is meet once a term before registration to go over the classes you plan to take the following term. Even then, it’s not like they can stop you if they don’t like your proposed schedule; they are mostly there to provide direction and guidance through the distribution requirements.

Carleton also has a great Career Center–it has already been extremely helpful as far as writing resumes and cover letters, and I’m only a freshman. There are also lots of cool programs like the externship program, which pairs current students with alumni for short (typically 5-10 days) externships in their fields of interest.

There is wireless, but depending on your location it can be rather spotty. I use wireless only when in the lounge (the place where the access point, and hence the max. signal is). Otherwise I prefer the ethernet cable, you get those for free.

I also have a few questions - this is a good idea for a thread!

-What is the roommate selection process like?
-Generally, which jobs do frehmen get for work/study?

And lastly…what’s your favorite thing about going to Carleton?

I would refer anyone with questions for current students to the 2014 Carleton Facebook group: <a href=“Facebook Public Group | Facebook”>Facebook Public Group | Facebook;

There just aren’t enough current students on this forum to have experts in every type of question. If you join the Facebook group, there are plenty of freshmen already answering questions on the discussion board.

You get assigned a roommate based on your preference form, a lot of the people work in dining halls, some get into language center, computing and services, library (shelving comes first), etc… What mflevity said, it would be great if you could ask the questions on the fb group – that way they will also be visible to the whole accepted class.

Thanks! As soon as I’m absolutely sure that Carleton’s where I’m going, I’ll definitely join the facebook group.

The most common job for work/study is Dining Services, but there are many other options. Not sure how, but D was assigned to an office job, which she worked for 2 years. Since then, she has done a variety of things, culminating with the coveted library position.

Roommate selection is based on a short questionnaire, and assignments are sent out sometime in late July, if I recall correctly.

Can you request a roomie? Someone you meet at Admitted Students Day, or on FB?

No, not really, unless they change the policy for this year/you have some SERIOUS reasons which require that you live with this person (I am just assuming they would let you choose in this case).

You cannot request a particular roommate as an entering freshman. I have never heard of any exceptions.

That’s cool. I just didn’t know that. :)

I actually think I’d like that better…takes all of the pressure off to find a roomie before the term actually starts…

To everyone who answered my questions: thank you so much!
