i am already enrolled in the NYLF:MED and I was really excited to do the program until I heard from a friend who did it that it wasn’t a very hands on program. So now I am thinking of doing Project Abroad in India. My friend went there last summer and she said it was great. Not only did she immerse herself in a new culture, but she go to help preform a surgery, help people with leprosy, and also the “untouchables”. I think this would be really cool just because its hands on and my friend said it really help her decide if she wanted to be a doctor or not. Also, I my school is allowing student to apply for a scholarship for Global Works, chances are if I apply I would go to Puerto Rico and this trip is more of the community service based type of program. If I got the scholarship I would do both because the Global Works program is in June and the Project Abroad program is in August. I guess my main question is should I ask for a refund for the NYLF:MED? I know its a great way to see different schools but I feel like I can do that on my own time. Also which program would look better on a college application? I come from a very competitive school and I could use anything possible to help me stand out.

I’ve heard pretty negative things about NYLF as far as the academic aspect. Everyone likes it because they make friends and have lots of free time, but the rest is kind of a joke. I’d do the Project Abroad and the Global Works if you get them!

yeah i know a senior in my school did it last year and he said it wasn’t very hands on…you get to watch surgeons perform and you do a lot of tours and walking around… my college counselor was telling me that doing the NYLF would help me to see a variety of schools and get to know the area of boston, but i feel as though i can do that on my own time. my parents also think that doing NYLF would help with admissions seeing as though some of the schools i am applying too the NYLF allows us to visit but i dont really think that will help me all that much. personally as far as the admissions part goes i think either going to india or puerto rico would be best because they’re unique and not every person does that. also, its INDIA i mean who wouldn’t be excited to go…
