Our August CC Book Club selection is A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. I know we’re a little late to the party on this one, but I hope that those of you who have already read the book will drop by and share your comments.
For those who have not read it, the title character of A Gentleman in Moscow is Count Alexander Rostov, sentenced by a Bolshevik tribunal to house arrest in the Metropol, a luxurious hotel across the street from the Kremlin. Per Barnes & Noble, “Rostov, an indomitable man of erudition and wit, has never worked a day in his life, and must now live in an attic room while some of the most tumultuous decades in Russian history are unfolding outside the hotel’s doors. Unexpectedly, his reduced circumstances provide him a doorway into a much larger world of emotional discovery.”
A Gentleman in Moscow was chosen as a 2016 best book of the year by NPR, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, The San Francisco Chronicle, and The Philadelphia Inquirer.
LOVED this charming book. So hard to put down…and so sad when it came to the end! I became familiar with Amor Towles from his book Rules of Civility, which is another fave of mine.
My hardback copy arrived yesterday. I guess I should start with my reread soon. I can read slowly - meander through the pages - this time around. I read through pretty intently the first time.
I wanted to pull up this thread for those who may have missed it in early June - and as a reminder for all who are interested in joining in the discussion.
If I get it in the next few days (and I’m next on the hold list) and it’s a great book, I shouldn’t have any problem. And if I don’t finish it by the 1st, I’ll just delay my joining the discussion.
I recently heard Amor Towles at a local book festival. I wasn’t interested in the book, but went to the talk only because my friends wanted to hear him. He got me–I bought the book, which he autographed. It’s a long read that I thought was very enjoyable. Looking forward to the discussion.
