A girl in industrial engineering? Better or worse off?

I am highly considering IE because I excel at math and science, but still like to deal with people. However, I was wondering if applying as an engineer makes it harder to get into schools, vs. applying as say a psychology/business/etc major. I know most engineering programs are harder to get into, and I don’t want to hurt my chances especially since i am still unsure whether engineering is for me. But, plot twist, I am a girl – and I’ve also heard that being a girl in the STEM areas makes it easier to get in…? can anyone verify or offer any feedback on this? but then again, it’s IE which is less hardcore, so i feel like more guys would do it. So what are my chances?
BTW I have a 35 ACT score, 800 on math level 2, and 790 on lit. looking at colleges such as U of I at urbana-champaign, northwestern, notre dame, cornell, stanford, etc.

It should help in your case but not in all cases. Your stats are up there. It wouldn’t help if you have 650 on math and want to apply to engineering because there is an edge. No it’s not going to happen. Do you have any outside activities to support your interest in engineering or math or science?

Unfortunately, not really, because I am actually a huge music person – I have some student government positions under my belt though, and i am a member of mu alpha theta. I just don’t want to apply in engineering if i am not 100% certain it is for me, if it lowers my chances of getting in.

I don’t know what to tell you but if you want the major apply. My coworker’s daughter is a very talented artist, she sold some of her art work for money, not huge but it shows that somebody was willing to pay for it. She also had very high stats, coming from a very academically talented family, she apply to MIT and Brown RISD program and was accepted. She is now study engineering and she really likes it.

Where is your home state and what is your uwGPA?
Girl applying to engineering school would have some advantage except for Stanford.

Illinois, and my GPA is 98/99 so I guess that’d be about a 4.0(?)

UIUC would be your best bet. Great engineering school with the lowest cost for you. NU would be a low reach to high match (try ED). Same for Cornell. Stanford would depend on your EC and essays. It is always a reach due to the low admission rate.

so overall I should go with applying engineering? It won’t hurt my chances?

^yes

Sure you should.
