A "hook" if needed....

I wanted to take a NYS regents in German, Italian, and Latin next June in order to show my interest in learning languages other than just my school’s (Spanish, which I will be in AP next year). I’ll be taking the AP Italian class as a senior as well as the APs of the other two languages (although since they are self-study, no college will really care about this since the only record of them is in the may ap exam). Coupled with all other “regular” EC’s (sports, clubs, volunteer), is this an example of a candidate “hook”?

Oh, and I’m not going crazy for a hook, I was just wondering if this would qualify as such.

It may, but, if you are considering this during senior year, it does not demonstrate particular devotion to multilingualism.

NYS Regents exams are usually taken after a three year course of study. If you have taken three years of these languages in school, then you should definitely take the Regents exams. If you are suggesting that you wish to take the Regents exams without having taken the course of study at the end of your junior year, then taking the SAT II exams in these subjects is another option. In fact, New York State accepts low scores on the SAT II’s as equivalent to a passing grade on the Regents:

SAT II German Listening and German Reading 470/470
SAT II Italian 450
SAT II Latin 470

If you think you can do well on the SAT II’s, then they may be a better choice.

No, I’m a rising junior.

It’s a nice effort, but I wouldn’t call that a hook. Taking a sample of different foreign language regents, all of which are a joke to anyone who knows the basics of that particular language, doesn’t really show more than grades. It just looks like you wanted to prove proficiency, which is great, but it itself isn’t unique. If you want to apply to a college with this entire foreign language angle, you can certainly do so, but to make it stand out, you would need to do alot more than score high on a few different language regents.

You’d have to do something more serious - putting together a literary magazine for your school of poems/writings from different foreign languages, maybe win some prizes in poetry contests for languages, and then write your college essay about all of this.

lol there’s no way I could do that. No big deal though, I’m just doing it then for my own benefit.

On second thought…I can always join the literary arts magazine club in school. You’re saying the poems and literature should be originally written and interwoven with actual pieces, or just all actual pieces that are analyzed?

wait, that’s literary ARTS -_-. I’m part of the newspaper though, maybe I can do something with that.
