Hi. My stats are low compared to those of other applicants, but I was wondering if the fact that I’ve only been here for several years (and I didn’t know English back then) would increase my chances a little bit. I would talk about it in the application essay. Stats: SAT- within the range, GPA weighted ~3.5 i think (dont know uw), some ec’s, all honors, 7APs, Asian Female, Georgia), great recs and essays. I heard that Emory puts a lot of weight on numbers.

Someone Pleaaaaaase…What do you think?

You have a shot! Just write great essays and show incredible interest. Emory loves the interest with bright students like you. I would be happy to read your essay/s. I have been through three children with college and I am a teacher. Our son is at Emory and loves it. Good luck.

Thank you for your replay, donleyc! :)

Anyone else??

What were your SAT scores? You really haven’t told us much here…

hey donleyc, I am applyig RD to emory and almost through with my essays. do you have an email that I could send them to and could you read over them? thanks

Sure, but somehow you cabn send to me without my posting my e-mail. Maybe webmaster would know.

I meant can, not cabn. Sorry.

Just click on the name in blue and PM (personal message) them…

This is what i think. Being a student who just moved here couple years ago isn’t a hook that compensates for a lower GPA, SAT…etc. It is a booster if you did really well on the SAT. That shows the applicant’s determination to do well. While there are lots of students (those who just moved here) who struggle to keep up, there are many who DO do well. I also just moved here from Taiwan 3 years ago, and I never thought my non-native status as a hook. Instead, I tried even harder to get that above average SAT score. So to answer your question, while it might be a hook for an in state college, higher tier schools like Emory don’t see that as anything. They accept tons of ambitious non-native speakers (even those who just moved here 3 or 4 years ago) with 3.7+ GPAs or 2100+ SAT scores every year.

Oh, just to give you some advice about essays, try not to use the non-native as your main topic. Tons of asians do that every year, so it’s a hard topic to pull off. I’m not saying don’t write anything about your experience prior to moving here. Instead, try to work your non-native status into another topic that you’re interested in. By doing that, you’ll let the college admin know that you just moved here couple years ago, and at the same time address a more refreshing topic.

I came here a year ago and my ENG is so bad. I got 750m 520cr and 540w for the first time taking. I’d write them a letter explaining my situation.
If i had got here one ore two years earlier, things could have been way easier for me:(
Btw, does the fact that ~30% of Emory population is Asian help?
