A Junior's Ambitions

I just received my SAT scores from the March 10 testing date, yesterday, I got a—1590—which some people have said is a good score for the first time taking the test, but I know it’s definitely not good enough for NYU. Plus, I know I can do much better!

Current Credentials:

 • 92.294 out of 100 GPA
 • 3.82 out of 4.00 GPA
 • top 13% of my class — 38 out of 291
 • Vice President of DECA at my school
 • JV Track & Field (9th)
 • Adv Show Choir & Concert Choir
 • Musical Theater - School & Outside of School
 • Oxford Youth Singers - Outside of school singing group
 • GMEA Georgia All-State Chorus
 • Regional Honor Chorus
 • BETA Club
 • National Honor Society
 • Student Council - Junior Class Representative
 • Art Club (10th, 11th, 12th)
 • Newton Youth Leadership Institute - My high school’s representative
 • Church Mass & Youth Choir
 • Church Youth Council
 • A lot of volunteer hours with various clubs and organizations
 • AP/Advanced Courses

I have excellent grades this year so far only one B in Honors/Adv Chemistry.
I guess my question is that—should I give up on trying to get into NYU?
Also, should I try to get tutoring for the SAT?

Bonus:
I just recently got accepted into NYU’s Pre-College program!

No, you definitely shouldn’t give up on NYU! I think you’ll have a solid chance if you improve your SAT score since your grades and ECs are really good.

I got accepted to NYU with a 3.1 UW GPA and 2250 SAT. I think my SAT score really helped me, so try your best to aim for somewhere around 2100. You can do it! Good luck! :)

You definitely have a shot to NYU. I have about the same GPA/class rank as you and I made it!

Maybe think about taking the ACT instead of the SAT? My SAT scores were abominable so I opted for the ACT instead and scored much better. NYU takes both tests. Some students just don’t test will under the format of the SAT and I felt the ACT was much easier; but, of course, that is just my opinion. I suggest taking the SAT again and if you don’t improve try the ACT.
