There is no question that all of the highly selective schools have experienced a surge in applications, resulting in “fewer students being accepted,” and indeed, this is scary. What I found reassuring in the article was the depth and breadth for which they evaluated their applicants. This is why there is no easy answer when a student posts here “well, I have XX SAT and YY GPA and I’ve taken 12 AP exams, etc., what are my chances of getting in.” Many students are just clicking “send” on their apps, spending little time truly evaluating whether that particular school is the right fit. But many other students ARE spending a great deal of time evaluating schools for the right fit – and I hope that if the students are spending that much time determining the right fit, that the colleges too spend a lot of time evaluating fit.
