A&M has two ways, top 10% or top 25% with a composite SAT score over 1300 or something like that. Anyways, UT seems to only have the top 7/8% going for them. Do they not have the top 25% +composite SAT thing also? If so what is it? and if not, why? Thanks
UT does not have automatic admission with respect to SAT scores. The university wouldn’t have enough space for extra admits.
A&M has lots of space because it keeps growing and is now bigger than UT.
At UT about 80% of the students are admitted under the top 10% program. The remaining (20%) are admitted holistically. It doesn’t have some known GPA / SAT formula to get in, but those who are rejected at UT have an opportunity get in after a year under CAP.
A&M has a GPA / SAT formula to get in, but there is no CAP for applicants who are rejected.
" there is no CAP for applicants who are rejected."
There is Blinn TEAM for TAMU hopefuls who don’t get in as HS seniors.
Thanks for this thread. I did not know UT did not have another admit for kids not in top 8%.
^yes they do. It’s “academic admits”. Typically, that means studentsin the top 10% in their class with very high SAT scores (2100) or ACT (32+), with some variations depending on majors in order to keep a balance at the university (it’s much harder if you want engineering or business, easier if you want Education, Liberal Arts, Natural Sciences, or Undeclared, and somewhat easier if you want Communication or Geoscience.)
@Hanna ,The Blinn program offers a limited number of applicants an opportunity to attend the Blinn Program. In contrast CAP is a wholesale program for those rejected by UT Austin. In other words, one may or may not be offered Blinn. In contrast CAP is offered to pretty much everyone who doesn’t get in at UT.
I could be wrong, but I believe that term “academic admit” is used by TAMU not UT.
The average SAT score of holistically admitted students is not 2100+ SAT or 32+ ACT. It is marginally higher than its auto admits which is about 1900.
Typically, the holistically admitted also include student athletes and minorities without less than stellar SAT scores and GPAs.
UT’s average SAT (M+V) score is about 20 points higher than TAMU’s. So, the two schools are academically comparable.
UTs auto-admit program is used to fill 75% of the class. Each year, they announce the cut off. This year auto-admits must be in the top 8%. UT also offers some students PACE or CAP as alternative paths to UT. About 16% is more holistic admissions for in-state students. @ 9% OOS/international. They have all the stats on their website (avg stats for various groups/colleges).
TAMU offers: 1. Auto admission to top 10%. 2. Auto admission to top 25% with 1300/1600 SAT (at least 600 on ea) or 30 ACT (27 sub-scores M and E) and meet HS course requirements. They also have alternatives listed on their website include Blinn.
Neither school guarantees first choice major to auto-admits.
Blinn Team is comparable to PACE at ACC/UT
CAP is comparable to PSA (Program for System Admission) at TAMU.
A&M fills majors on a first come first serve basis. Auto admits who apply early enough get their major. Those who wait, don’t.
UT has a special exemption under the top 10 percent law because they would fill the entire class with auto admits if they didn’t.
Generally, true, but strong applicants such as National Merit Finalists are an exception and accommodated whenever they apply.
