A Meta-thread to save us all time

My cat is black. Is that URM anywhere?

As long as your cat doesn’t cross the path, he/she should be fine.

In reviewing the current topic of discussion, I could easily be banned or this thread again be sent to oblivion for the responses I’ve contemplated. :D

Alas, they are so fitting. However, discretion is the better part of valor.

Ponder the choices. I shall return in less tempting circumstances.

These are times of economic woe, therefore I am forced to choose between my kitty and my dog for the limited college fund. Although kitty is much smarter, fido gets to go. Admissions tells me since one human year = 7 dog years, fido should be able to graduate in a year if he applies himself with a heavy woofload!

GA2012Mom, you made the right choice. In general dogs are far more suited to higher level learning than mangy felines. A dog will strive to please, and you’d have less worries about a dog following directions.

Cats are really far too independent. Personally, I can’t see why anyone would even want one. Nasty creatures. No wonder they’ve been associated with the black arts throughout the ages. Shifty. Sneaky. Don’t perform well under structure.

Far too much like children.

I dunno. Dogs are such grade grubbers, though much nicer to be around.

Cats are “brilliant under-achievers”, at least their owners think so.

Which will do better in an “elite” college? this has been a subject of endless debate…somewhere, I’m sure.

BTW, Violadad, I appreciate your earlier discretion! :)

Those who believe dogs would do better are confusing grades with “education.”

I agree cats are brilliant underachievers…all they need is motivation.

Many dogs are smart, but I have also met a lot of really dumb dogs. Nice, friendly, but rather dim bulbs. OTOH, good possibilities for athletic scholarships, come to think of it.

However, both cats & dogs are URMs at most colleges, so I would definitely try for scholarships that way.

The simple truth is that cats make terrible dogs. If you want someone suitable for training, get a dog. If you want someone capable of mastering the higher arts of independent thinking, confidence, daring - then get a cat. Dogs are followers, cats are leaders.

However, I do think it’s a waste of time spending money to educate someone who already knows everything.

^^^ Binx, if it’s a waste of time spending money to educate someone who already know everything, why in the world am I bothering to educate my teenagers??

ROFL

Thanks garland. It was a wrenching decision. I hate not swinging at perfect setups.

I know this doesn’t directly relate to the perfect path, but in case the responses might be of help to others, I thought I’d post this question anyway: I find the generally available college window decals, etc., much, much too small. People have to get really close to my car to be able to read about how well I’ve done at placing my kids! That just doesn’t seem right.

Does anybody know where I can buy full-window-size stickers? Or perhaps flashing rooftop signs? Tasteful, of course. In school colors perhaps?

Harriet, a great idea. Imagine H,Y, P or S filling the entire rear window of your Ford Expedition, Lincoln Navigator, or Caddy Esplinade. It opens many potential marketing avenues. LED solar powered outline lights for night viewing could be a nice cost plus feature.

I would also suggest that in these tough economic times that states with noted institutions acquire “name” rights to prestigious institutions for use on vanity car registration plates. A simple additional tax break might be all that is necessary to acquire these licenses, no need for royalties. They could be sold by the DMV’s at a percentage of annual published COA, and as such be beyond the reach of average joe, thereby maintaining the snob appeal.

A nice plate, with the college image as background, the name prominently featured would be very tasteful. The actual vehicle registration number could be in small alpha-numerics, in a corner so as not to hinder the overall presentation.

Let the peons and unworthy buy the Podunk U type $15 plastic license plate frames.

um. Tennessee does have license plates with school names…a percentage goes to the school. interestly, it took years before there was enough interest for an Elvis plate.

A large and visible sign on your car showing everyone the prestigious schools your children attend is a perfect way to help others to literally follow you down the Right Path. Harriet, you are an inspiration to us all.

DS and I once discussed the idea of saving almost $200k by dropping into the Harvard bookstore, buying a Harvard sticker, and putting it on the car. When a job interviewer asked if he really attended Harvard, he could say, “Just look at my car!” Or better yet, we were going to get Harvard, MIT, and Dartmouth stickers and put them all on the car just to see people’s reactions.

I’ve also been thinking a lot lately about all the political yard signs everyone has - for local elections as well as bigger ones. After the election, I plan to replace these with large signs showing the names of my children’s schools. I feel this would raise the tone in my neighborhood. Also, they could be arranged to outline the Right Path (or as some call it, my sidewalk).

Random thoughts this morning…
1)Is there a post election yardsign graveyard where all signs go to run around in the fields and be free? Maybe its the same place as the christmas tree graveyard. I guess that would be called a wood chipper.

2)Are the goats and cows and chickens and cats and dogs applying for secondary education part of Heifer Interntional? If not, they really should be. Great community service (for real)[Charitable Gift Giving that Makes a Difference | Heifer International](http://www.heifer.org/site/c.edJRKQNiFiG/b.183217/)

3) I want to personally thank the person who is once again adding levity to our local elections. There is a guy running for re-election (unopposed) for local DA named Pat Head. Someone likes to risk arrest, but amuse the community by changing the “A” in Pat’s first name to an “O” on all his yard signs!

4) Why don’t college applications ask the student to tell (write/provide) a joke? That would be so much more interesting, and would add to the adcomm’s joke repertoire. My s got asked (in an interview for something last night) to tell a joke. The joke he told: (Q) What kind of bees make milk? (A)… wait for it… boo-bees. We’ll find out today if he was accepted to what he applied for. Don’t know if that joke helped him or hurt him.

jym, thank you. My laptop definitely needed to be sprayed with coffee this morning.

I guess my work here is done, Harriet. BTW, which item caused the spray o’ caffeine?

The one-two punch of your candidate Pot Head and the boo-bees joke. I’m easy. :D
