A Meta-thread to save us all time

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I have a life-threatening problem!!!

I’m a junior with a 1.3 gpa, no shadowing, no volunteering, and no ECs, can I still get into a top medical school?

Oh, and BTW, what’s this MCAT everyone keeps talking about?

zoosermom, I am sure he’s on the right pathway because MY pathway is the RIGHT pathway and I know more than ANY of you about ANYTHING and I have STUDIES to prove it.

Also, his teacher thinks he’s cute. Is there a cuteness EC? We don’t pay him to play with Legos; does all his building time count as volunteer hours? What about when he plays with Legos on vacation in exotic locales? If he’s building little houses, and his Lego minifigs have no income, would Habitat be interested?

Depends. Will you bring shame and dishonor to the family if you don’t become a doctor, even though the Iditarod is clearly your all-consuming passion?

Maysixx, there are many excellent medical schools that will accept you; and give quite a bit of merit aid as well. Look at small schools in the Dominican Republic; many hidden gems abound.

Who needs safeties? I’m going to put in bids on all the granites. Surely someone will get me a good price. I deserve it. If I get a lot of offers, I’ll be back to ask which granite looks more prestigious.

Did I mention how important I think it is to consider binge drinking rates?

“zoosermom, I am sure he’s on the right pathway because MY pathway is the RIGHT pathway and I know more than ANY of you about ANYTHING and I have STUDIES to prove it.”

Ok, fine, be that way. But at age 6, my kid had already cured several tropical diseases. Yours is just not where he needs to be, is all I’m saying.

Binge apple juice drinking at his kindergarten is lower than ANY OTHER KINDERGARTEN and this proves that it is the best kindergarten. Which of course increases his chances at HYPS, AWS, and Brown’s 20-year LME (Lego Medical Engineering) program.*

He hasn’t cured any diseases but he has built a prosthetic heart out of Legos. Will that help?

Also, mathmom? If you don’t get a lot of good offers, it’s the essay.

Well, here’s what’s really on my mind: what kind of car can I bring to campus as a freshman, even though all the info says, “no cars for freshmen.” I am sure they’ll make an exception for my DS since he is clearly above all the other freshmen.

And (where is he when I need him?) WashDad: which Roomba model should I get?

No Harriet, it must be the rec’s.

fencersmother, you fell down here. If he’d taken enough AP’s, he would be enrolling as a sophomore and could bring 3 cars if he wanted to. It’s much easier to graduate in 6 years if you start out as a sophomore. You really disappoint me here.

I am a product of public schools, where they had no SAT prep course. :(

I promise to re-take the SAT 11 times though, working toward that perfect score. I will even have my DS take it another 10 times so we can have similar experiences in life.

1000 pardons.

“* He hasn’t cured any diseases but he has built a prosthetic heart out of Legos. Will that help?”

The cute thing might cancel out this hook because cute = advantaged. Maybe he’ll grow out of the cute or overcome a very great obstacle before he applies to college. Can you seek out such an obstacle? Perhaps Kaplan or even Sally Rubenstone might have some options. You’ve got to have a plan here, Harriet. You act like you have all the time in the world and, really, you don’t.

I’ve been thinking of getting plastic surgery to make myself ugly. Could that be a hook?

You’re not LISTENING. I have a PLAN. My PLAN is to keep posting my own opinions, because they are the BEST, and to ignore anything else that anyone posts, because THEIR OPINIONS ARE NOT AS GOOD AS MINE.

However, zoosermom, I am all in favor of anything that increases the level of anxiety in my house, as long as the increase is commensurate with a rising sense of entitlement and/or exalted privilege. Recognizing that, I may well call a conference with S2 when he comes home from Enriched After-Kindergarten Physics (Wave Motion of Mud Puddles), and demand to know why he did not get a gold star in Map Folding, and also remind him that all is lost if he does not pull his grade in Handwashing up to at least a silver.

I just found out DS will be rooming with ANOTHER PERSON. OMG!!! I am thinking of having him withdraw from T.I.T.S., before the semester even starts.

It’s your kid, Harriet. Clearly he’s bound for a non-prestigious state school and a lifetime of asking if you want fries with that, but if that’s good enough for you …

Also, if I keep posting in this thread, I think I will eventually become a Member, which has much, much more prestige than Junior Member. It is my dream level of membership. Does anyone have any advice on how I can best attain it?

Which reminds me, how will I ever manage to share a bathroom with another person? I have avoided public bathrooms all my life because there’s just something oogy about washing your hands in the same basin where another person may have washed their hands an hour earlier. Not like I’m a germaphobe or anything.
