A Meta-thread to save us all time

“I’m not sure legacy is good enough anymore for first grade. Are you a development admit? The Welsch Play-Doh Table has a nice ring.”

Well, that’s fine if you want to go to any old school, but I would hope WelschJr prefers a school with a solid intellectual life where he can discuss Barney and Teletubbies and Dora the Explorer only with his intellectual peers, and let the riff-raff play with the Play-Doh. There are only a few of those kinds of schools in this country, you know.

Also, if the pregnant man has a vaginal birth this summer, do I really need to hear any more about it? No.

my six year old D wants to major in block building - I hear that is a great backdoor since it’s mostly boys - is that true?

Getting into First Grade is just a crap shoot anyway. Realize that many of those turned away have the ability and credentials to be successful. They only have so many slots and they can’t accept all those amazing kids.

“my six year old D wants to major in block building - I hear that is a great backdoor since it’s mostly boys - is that true?”

I think that actually is true as long as she has a documentable interest in and affinity for block building.

I am really pressed for time - could someone tell me what this thread is about?

Much, much needed humor.

Don’t deny yourself reading the whole thing from the beginning. And don’t miss Violadad’s early post here.

well my 6 yr old actually skipped first grade entirely–likely due to my insistence on only using those European building blocks in kindergarten, and only 20 minutes a day as we try to focus on vocab building–he knows most of the 4378 SAT words, and is gifted in art–(he does find it frustrating that I don’t permit actual media to be used but he does know all the artists in the Impressionist Painters flash cards set. (paint is so messy and time consuming)
pm me if you haven’t gotten a response from the first grade adcoms–I know most of them.

Wait, which Path are European building blocks on?

If he wants to be an architect, find the most prestigious school and apply there. It doesn’t matter if it has an architecture school or not. Why would that matter? Sheesh.

You people are so silly. I don’t understand why you stress out so much about this stuff.

DS got the Harvard Book Award.

Does he need to fill out an actual Harvard application? I assume not.

Psst, I heard that bulding with Legos is only offered at a few selective schools, and Legos are the next big thing in architecture.

DS can’t decide between H, P, Y and T.I.T.S so we’ll just send the deposit into all of them and let him tell us which road to get on in August. That’s ok right? We’ll get our deposits back when he doesn’t show up won’t we?

Harriet–if you need to get your name on a building, I have some students who’d be willing to do it for you, as long as you provide the spray paint.

Singersmom, that’s a fine strategy, and your cash is safe. With the admissions as crazy as they are, you might even get some extra money. Has anyone recieved a similar letter? “Dear Mom, we are so happy to learn that your little Johnny might not want to attend our fine educational instution. We are sending him a $1000 unenrollment fee and hoping that he accepts this fine offer, so we can offer his spot to the highly-prized tuba soloist whom we somehow missed during our frenetic reading of the applications and placed onto our bloated waitlist.”

She doesn’t want to be an architect,. She just wants to indicate that her major will be blockbuilding because she heard it’s a backdoor for a girl to get into HYPS. She’s going to be a doctor. She doesn’t know that yet, so don’t tell her. But the only way I’ll pay for college is if I get to say “My D the doctor went to HYPS” at the end of the day.

My son got the “I read the Cat in the Hat book 1.25 times by the time I was 18” award and he was automatically accepted into Harvard. So I would guess not. Your kid is golden. Oh yeah and he got into Princeton, Yale and Stanford too. We sent deposits to all of them. They refunded the deposits and said not to worry, just show up the first day and he could have a room at the college president’s home. He did take the ACT just in case and he got a 42.6 so that might have helped too.

DS was very very sad that he did not get into the T.I.T.S. program. It was one of his very favorites.

And yes of course you will get your deposits back. With interest. And in a 529 plan so you can use it for your next kid.

Harvard book award? Then you must be one of the lucky ones

that received a FREE Harvard Viewbook so your offspring unit is

definitely in, start wearing the T-shirt! It must be because you

indicated interest in the summer at Harvard for high school students!!!

kitkat, thanks for the confirmation. I highly doubt the deposit will be necessary in my angel’s case, though.
