A mission impossible or a reachable goal?

Hi,

I’m applying to college this autumn, and I’d like to achieve over around 600 on the Chinese SAT in December or January. I pick up languages fairly quickly, for some reason (I learnt a lot of Malay from my mum before), so could I learn Chinese from scratch in order to achieve a reasonable score by next January at the latest?

Thanks :)

Not sure if it is possible. But, I don’t think a 600 is a good or even okay score to send in to any college that needs SAT IIs.

I mean, could it fulfil the foreign language requirement? I’m planning to do SAT IIs in Math II, Lit, Biology, Chemistry and World History, so the language is something extra in that regard.

lol 1) 600 is not good enough.
2) it’s frickin Chinese…not like us history or something…even spanish is easier.
but if youre asian then i guess you have a chance,

Well, my mum is Malay, and she says Malay is quite close to Chinese. Not sure whether that’s true or not, though.

And, like I said before, I don’t intend to use this as my only “humanities” SAT - it’s just that, as a homeschooler, I need to have some way of showing I’ve learnt a foreign language.

I think it’s worth a shot, I think if your other scores are high then anything about 600 is permissible for a language you’ve only just learned and they might take that into consideration. But you’re already doing more than the required amount of subject tests, don’t do it if it’ll cause you too much stress :)

Ok, thanks ^^.

How good are you at memorizing vocab? The Malay background will help with grammar and perhaps listening, but Mandarin Chinese is basically vocab vocab vocab. (Nearly-illiterate native speaker here who got ~650 on a practice Chinese SAT II. The reading comprehension in context was not good.)

No way python. There’s a few reasons: you take a langauge SAT to a) fulfill your subject test requirements or b) show colleges you can speak a language. You can already speak malay so just put that on your application! It’s absolutely crazy to learn a whole language from scratch! Latin is closer to English, but I could never learn Latin that fast! You’d be working your butt off for a mediocre score of 600 and it just wouldn’t be worth it. There’s so many other subject tests you can take, find other ones becaue SAT Chinese is just out of the question.
