A nice story

We live across the street from an African American chuch. It’s the kind where the ladies wear hats every Sunday and the gentlemen wear suits and the kids say “ma’am” and “sir.” You get the picture. Nice people, fabulous music. Last night my ten-year-old son was practicing his clarinet, playing things like “Amazing Grace,” “Morning Has Broken” and “Oh When the Saints Go Marching In.” He was practicing with the window open and, unbeknown to us, a musical group from “Down South” had come to the church to play a concert. So as he was playing his songs, we suddenly heard from across the street the same songs repeated back by the saxophone players! My son tentatively would play a song and they would respond with a jazzed up version. This went on for a little while and eventually neighbors from up and down the block came out to listen or listen out of the windows. My little guy eventually came out with the clarinet and the saxophone players came across to talk to him, tickled I think by the small boy, and gave him some nice advice and encouragement. Son was absolutely awestruck. After we went back in, he said to me “they were SO PHIS TI CATED!!!” It was just lovely.

This is a GREAT story, zm!

probably an event that your son will remember forever!

Oh he will. You should have seen his awe and amazement. (And of course snarky mom said “I bet THEY practiced when they were ten.”)

I love that.

sounds like a nice screenplay for a short film. :)

That’s lovely all around! I’m sure the adult players enjoyed the experience as much as your son. Your son’s playing should improve by leaps and bounds after this impromptu tutorial!

Also nice to hear a 10 year old using the word “sophisticated.” He’s ahead on the SAT vocab words.:)

Well Marite, that’s why I typed sophisticated the way I did. Because he was trying to figure it all out! It was really a great thing so nice. The people associated with the church are all very nice. We let them block or park in our driveway because parking is scarce and a lof of their members are elderly.

So very cool!!! I would have loved to have heard that.

If you haven’t heard sax players from “Down South” play Oh When the Saints go marching in, you haven’t lived! That’s one of the songs that son plays so often that I want to pull my face off, but we’ll see if he learned something last night.

Thanks for bringing a smile to my face with your story!

What a magical moment. Thanks so much for sharing it with us.

I love it!!! That story will get me through the rest of the week. =)

If musicians ran the world, it would be a better place.

What an awesome experience! Magical is right.

What an incredible moment! Thanks for sharing this. It brightened my day. :)

What a heartwarming story. Thank you for sharing that =)

zm - thanks for posting this, it made my day!

People are great! Certain individuals can be such a pain in the @**!

I married a musician. He runs my house when I’m at work. Based upon my experiences so far, I can say with near certainty that it would be a better place, but it’s very probable that nobody would pick up their shoes and put them in the closet where they’re supposed to go. ;)
