I know this might sound like a stupid ordeal, but my Chem teacher pressured me to get a 5 all year. Since I was a junior, she said that she heard from admissions officers from the Ivies that applications that have a non-5 on AP Chem were sent to the reject pile. I know that sounds crazy, but she’s a very passionate chem teacher and educator in general who’s won state awards in teaching. I just want to verify that this claim seems ridiculous…(please try not to ■■■■■)

It is quite ridiculous. Although getting say a 3 might be ever so slightly negative, it certainly wouldn’t cause your application to automatically go to the reject pile.

As well, a 4 (not just a 5) is a good thing to include for your application.

Let’s check out some results threads from HYP, shall we?

Anyway, you said not to ■■■■■, so I think you know the answer already.

I know a few people who were telling me that just one or two people in their AP Chem classes got a 5, the rest 4’s and below. Many of those 4’s (a couple 3’s too) got into their top schools. It’s a very difficult test, and many brilliant kids get 4’s yet do fine.

Though I’m not sure how this would apply to someone applying to a top chemistry or chemical engineering program or something.

Sorry guys. Yeah, the answer was pretty obvious; it’s just that out of the 80 kids that took AP Chem in my school, I was the only junior, so there was a considerable amount of pressure on me to get a 5. I won’t let my 4, or my fervent teacher, get to me. Thanks erbody!

it seems that there are a number of MIT (though not Ivy League) students who got 2’s, 3’s, and 4’s on AP chem - [MIT Chemistry: Differences Between 5.112 and 5.111](<a href=“MIT Department of Chemistry – Department of Chemistry at MIT”>http://www.mit.edu/~chemistry/academic/differences.html)
while it’s self reported, I’m assuming it’s fairly accurate…
