Ugghh… of course the IRS didn’t post any of the FAQ about returning deceased payments until May 6. It was all over the news in mid April that payments were going out to dead people. And their instructions did not come out until May 6. They must have been aware since the letter and paper checks clearly say ‘Deceased’ on them.
When specifically asked on a talk show earlier this week, the Treasury Secretary( I think it was him) said “Oh, did that happen? There may have been some glitches in the system. Payments should be returned”. That’s when this all suddenly came up with newly posted return instructions.
Ours just hit our account, only a little over a week after I entered direct deposit info on the IRS site. We got just under $2,200. It’s kind of shocking, to be honest.
Using it on either our garage building project – in-town contractor, locally sourced lumber – or to prepay another quarter of our 2020 taxes.
@3sonsmom , you and son should check out what his college is doing with their stimulus funds. Was his campus job work study? Some colleges are giving some of the money to the students.
Also check out state unemployment law and find out if he’s eligible for unemployment. I know college kids getting unemployment right now.
I filed 2018 (no refund, no payment), get social security direct-deposited, did not file 2019 yet, moved on 3/31. The IRS tool just told me today that my payment will be direct-deposited tomorrow, at last!
@bluebayou I have looked about once a week since the tool was created. This was the first time I got concrete information, although last time I got to input my new address and same old same old direct deposit info. The only reason I bothered was that I read about this “last day” information.
@cptofthehouse I asked my son, he hasn’t heard anything from his on campus job. He worked at the athletic facility which closed the day school went on-line. The school received stimulus like most colleges. Three of us read the unemployment stipulations, job ended due to Covid 19. He hasn’t heard from unemployment since they requested additional info 10 days ago. It affected 8 weeks of work, March to May.
I did see a couple of posts of schools continuing to pay students (one was Washington and Lee I believe). My son would have heard if they intended to pay by now.
This is the first time I’ve been on this thread. I thought there might be insight about this looming deadline. I logged into the link above, and it said they have scheduled our check to be mailed out 5/15. Does that sound unusual? Anyone gotten something similar?
My daughter’s checked was forwarded to her new address!! She had a May 1 payment date and it arrived today. She also found out her new mailbox is not sealed well, so during the pouring rain today, the check got soaked and ripped in two when she opened it. I know she took a picture to deposit it, so hopefully it will go through without a problem.
Very strange. Both wife and I get Social Security direct-deposited. We paid taxes with our returns both 2018 and 2019, via electronic transfer from checking. Feds definitely has our bank info.
When I went to the IRS’s Where’s My Stimulus Check? (or whatever they called it) website, I was told my bank info was missing. Provided it, and bingo, money was there this week.
Our kids, who all got refunds, got their stimulus $ at the start.
I provided bank deposit info several weeks ago. At first it said everything was in order and the site would update with our deposit date. Then it said they needed our 2019 taxes. As far as we knew, our accountant had already submitted them.
Today we noticed funds were deposited in our account on Wednesday, the same day my husband gets his SS check. Not sure if the deposit was made because they had our info through SS, or because I gave them bank account info on irs.gov.
My parents get direct deposit SS, but the site says a paper check is to be mailed today. I thought they were going to access SS direct deposit info, so that those recipients didn’t need to worry about going online, but I guess not.
I posted on 5/07/20 that husband joked we would get a paper check in Sept and it arrived yesterday. Our last name starts with letter A but that is just a guess. We didn’t go online and he would not put bank info on the site for direct deposit so it worked out.
I’ve read that too. And it makes a lot of sense to put the money in the hands of the lowest income people first.
But there’s a flaw to that system if they aren’t differentiating between individual and joint returns. If that’s the case, then a single taxpayer with a $60,000 AGI will receive their money much earlier than a married couple with an AGI of $100,000, or $50,000 apiece.
i think a married couple with an AGI of 100k is better off than a single person with 60K, so I think that is fine. It doesn’t take twice as much money to live on when a household is shared.
@HouseChatte what are y’all going to do? My 88yo mother is worried that she will get money for my dad, who died in early March. I told her if she does and then they want it back they will find her, but she is determined to be proactive.
This page https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/economic-impact-payments has the Get My Payment link for tax filers where she might be able to find out what amount she’s getting and prepare mentally and administratively either way. (I was able to see my mother’s info before the payment hit.)
I think your mother might not be able to get ahead of it if it’s coming, which must be so stressful, but at least there are instructions and she can return it as soon as she wants/needs to get rid of it. And my condolences to both of you and your family. Seeing an erroneous payment come to your dad would be so painful, and I hope she gets the correct amount.
As for what we’re doing, MIL was mailed a paper check. Husband is definitely not cashing it. We had joked about displaying it, and when today’s letter came I told him he’d need a bigger frame.
