A place for folks having stimulus check issues to vent and compare notes

still stuck with the Not Available screen. (not even sure why I continue to check…)

Got ours today too. D1 got hers last week. D2 is still in status not available…

Our was deposited today and has been listed as pending to our checking account since Friday or Saturday. Now if my unemployment check would deposit like it is suppose to, I will be happy.

My daughter said some of her 17 year old friends got $1200 checks in the deposited in their accounts. How can a 17 year old who lives at home not be claimed as a dependent? I am confused. Also, our daughter in college we still claim and consider a dependent. How are all these kids getting stimulus checks? We are not eligible for any stimulus money.

My deceased Dad was one of the very first direct deposits over 3 weeks ago. I researched heavy on IF and HOW I could ever return it. Because I am the Trustee I needed to decide if I should disburse it to the three heirs. Everything I read said there is no Clawback, and for all I know it was meant for everyone that filed and paid taxes in 2019, which I had done for my father.

Then last week I got the ‘personal’ letter from the President. It clearly said
John Doe, Deceased
c/o Daughter Doe

Nothing in the letter said I needed to return the money. So, based on the fact that the President clearly knew they sent money to a dead person, I decided to disburse it out. Today my sister calls frantically and tells me the IRS wants it back. How the heck is that going to happen?? Am I supposed to just send a random check to the IRS?? And good luck ‘clawing’ that back from my Deadbeat Brother!

Site said mom’s check would be deposited on May 6 and it was there in her account yesterday.

Anyone who filed 2019 married and joint gotten a paper check yet. I’m hoping that an interpretation of the check mailing schedule ive seen , where single filers get their checks first in ordered of income, followed by married filing jointly is not correct. Otherwise a number of families not getting their checks till next month despite being low income

Yes, young folks can get the check simply by fining as a non dependent this year. Then they amend their return when their parents file with them as a dependent. This is what a number recent college grads are doing to get their money. Likely that 2020 taxes returns will give them the stimulus money as a regular fable credit but means waiting a year for the money that they need and want NOW. That one’s status right now which may put you right smack in category of needing that check, is negated by being a dependent the prior year is a drawback in the system used to determine eligibility for this money. I didn’t quite understand why being age 18 and dependent kicks one out of the $500 per dependent eligibility, but, for some of these people, they’ve found the workaround.

Those who edge out of a check as married filing jointly but qualify married filing separately are using that trick too. File and then amend

^^^Meant first sentence to be a question. Anyone who filed 2019 Married filing Jointly get their checks in the mail yet?

Hi, I’m not going to wade through 17 pages but I figured out something that helped me. I rechecked the website two days ago. I had previously gotten the “not available” message but this time I changed how I entered the address, writing out “Street” vs. “St.” Apparently it is very picky. It then allowed me to enter bank information for reimbursement.

@coralbrook just yesterday IRS gave instructions for returning deceased people’s payments. However, there is also no indication that they are going to hunt it down, either. If it makes you feel better, you/your sister could return your share…

@calla1 The initial problem with the IRS site was that if you entered the address improperly 3 times you were locked out for 24 hours.

I’ve tried to find a link on irs.gov but couldn’t, do you mind posting if you can?

@cptofthehouse We are married, file joint return, usually get a refund and no paper check yet. DH said we’ll likely get it in Sept (is he guessing, joking?). I’m more curious College son who lost campus job, will his unemployment get approved?

They need to do an episode of the Walking Dead trying to get to DC to return their stimulus checks - apparently, they want them back from the dead people they sent them to.

Both my D’s got their money deposited on Wednesday. One only got a few hundred and said she feels guilty as she is working. I told her she can donate it to someone she knows who is in need.
My other D got her approval for unemployment. She is at 30% of her pre Covid hours. The first two weeks prior to the Care Act passing she was determined to have made too much money so didn’t get the state amount. She got approved for the month of April for the $600 plus a small amount from the state. She isn’t sure when she will get the money. She is a paralegal and the courts are beginning to slowly open up and she is hoping her hours will go back up and she won’t need the unemployment.

They may want them back from the dead person, but I guess my worry is that if an heir cashes them, that might be some sort of fraud. (Though my sister could really, really, use it…)

Questions 10 and 41

I did hear on the national news this morning that experts say the IRS probably won’t go after people who don’t return the checks. Also, if you get a check for $2,400, you don’t have to return any of it even if your spouse has died.

We are no way cashing the Economic Impact Payment check made out to late MIL. Husband is a federal employee – taking government funds to which he isn’t entitled is absolutely not a good look on him.

Thank you!
