Oh my goodness, I google image searched that name and see a photo someone posted online. This absolutely would have been recycled and this family member expected a check so was not watching and none of us pre-Googled what it would look like. I wonder what they are doing about the ones thrown away?
@somemom - I think I read you can apply for a replacement but, I think they charge $7.50.
My problem is…I don’t know if I got this and tossed it…or whether I wasn’t entitled to any of this money at all.
If I was entitled, I was expecting a check…not a debit card.
I still want to know…who is profiting by having these debit cards issued?
I had lots of fun with my debit card from Uncle Sam. I got it in the mail yesterday. I went on line and did everything I needed to to set up the account (required my husbands SS and name - even though the card has both of us on it).
Then I thought I would be smart and take it to my bank branch today to deposit it. Well, both banks I use have closed their branches in my town (recently, because I have been to them since the pandemic started - I thought we were supposed to be opening things up not closing them.)
I came home, took several deep breathes and tried to do a funds transfer to my checking account using the site. After several fails (a variety of things - site timing out, error messages, etc.) I got a message about bad account.
I called the number on the letter and got directed to “activate” my card (didn’t I activate it when I spent several screens setting up my account yesterday). BTW it required the last 6 (not 4) digits of husband’s SS #.
Now that the card was activated, I was able to go back into the site and request the transfer to my checking account. It worked (well it said the transfer will take place).
@kiddie, did you also get a government letter announcing you would receive the debit card? I am trying to figure out if the card comes before or after the letter.
For the direct deposits, the letter came much later, like 2-3 weeks.
@somemom I did not receive anything prior to the nondescript envelope that showed up with my debit card inside.
Hmm, I guess we will have to assume that it was recycled. Crazy how they did this.
You will be able to claim it on your 2020 taxes if you qualify and never receive it. It will take a while, but you will get the money.
Still haven’t gotten a letter - only the debit card in the plain envelope (came Monday).
Can anyone share the return address on the letter? I easily could have tossed it. Still, I don’t think I qualify.
your address and the return address are in plastic windows (not printed on envelope)

It definitely feels like a card is inside.
Don’t you have a copy of your 2018 tax return? Your AGI is entered on it. That is the amount they are going off of to determined if you are eligible to received money.
I think someone got the idea to do debit cards so the money would be spent and circulated back into the economy, instead of going into a savings account like where my son put his and where it will sit for years.
There have been articles in the paper that a large majority of people aren’t spending the money.
If it were me, I would call my Congressperson and Senators and complain. Not that it will do anything, but to register you dissatisfaction.
Our payment was direct deposited on May 12. We just got our letter yesterday.
We’re spending it, all right. The $2,000 plus will cover one-fourth of our new boiler.
ETA question for those of you who received cards (and sympathetic shudders!): Do they show any info about it on the irs.gov site?
Remember way back when the government said that the mailing of paper checks would not be completed until August? Perhaps the debit card arrangement was with an outside vendor who was able to get the money to people quicker.
I suspect there will be another stimulus payment. Right before the elections. And those cards might be where they’ll go so font pitch them after you empty them. It’s cheaper to load the card multiple times than to send out multiple checks.
No…and that’s the problem. It was saved as a PDF on a computer that crashed. That is why we had to file a paper return.
And please don’t spend time criticizing me for this. It was an honest error that never happened before.
No intention of criticizing you. Stuff happens.
Here is my attempt to deposit story:
We live in a rural area but, have a branch bank close by so, my husband and I went to the bank to deposit the money from the card.
That branch did not have the capability to do a cash advance so we were told we would have to go to a main bank location. We specifically asked- “do we both need to go?” They said “No- either one of you can do it.” Since my husband had other errands, I drove 25 minutes to the other bank.
There I learned that they could neither deposit or cash the card because we both were not present.
My husband & I have separate accounts and since there was no account with both names on it- it was a no go. So, be forewarned - if anyone else has separate accounts and both names are on the card- it gets more complicated.
One of these days it will be deposited. I hope.
