A Psychologist for Aiding the Mentally Challenged with the TABE test.

Hello,

My brother is a higher functioning mentally handicapped adult who is having a difficult time preparing for the TABE test by way of the community college system. RCCC in Salisbury, NC has a program called SOAR for adults with severe retardation – but they will not help my brother with TABE, most likely because the TABE is unreachable for those with severe loss of brain function. Instead the pre-GED/TABE program is responsible for TABE preparation but my brother has been involuntarily withdrawn for lack of progress.

All I am saying is that in general a community college is not funded to deal with special cases. However, a psychologist might be equipped with the expertise to assist my brother. Part of the problem is my brother is “difficult”. Anyone that tries to help my brother is told all sorts of off topic/off focus things. He may resort to saying things related to his own low self esteem like “I don’t like shrinks” or “It is not me that needs help – we all need help”.

My brother says he can read and he can but not at a level that will help him prepare for the TABE test. I further believe that his reading comprehension is the reason he has no interest in preparing for the TABE on his own at home so he can make some progress and get back into the program at his school (RCCC) for the pre-GED/Adult Studies/TABE test. I believe a psychologist could sit down with my brother and work with him on the easiest TABE level using a study guide and practice tests. The psychologist could try to figure out how my brothers brain damage is affecting his learning.

Thanks For your Consideration,
