A Question about Bookstores

What happens to magazines/books that aren’t sold and have a “time limit” on them, so new issues or editions are constantly replacing them on the shelves? I have always wondered this and know that they have to go somewhere. Do they get sent back to the publisher? Do they get shredded up? Do they donate them?

I wonder. I always see zillions of magazines at the grocery store, but it seems like they’re always there.

It’s like they’re tossed into a black hole. They mysteriously disappear and get replaced, but no one knows where they go.

For books: the covers are ripped off and they are thrown in the trash. No joke.

That’s tragic if it’s true. They could donate them to a used bookstore, or atleast to a Goodwill. Or a garage sale. Most people wouldn’t think to throw away old clothes or old (still good) food, would they? (Although books aren’t of life’s necessities).

Hmmm maybe I’ll start my own literacy book drive.

Yes. But many a times books reported as destroyed to the publisher make way to the market again. This is why you see a note saying that “this book shouldn’t be sold without its cover” on many books.

I was really amused when I found this.

^I always wondered why books said that. I thought it was odd if someone published a book but allowed it to get stolen before they put the cover on.

gasp That’s horrible! Are they recycled at least? Now I know why they have that message. . .

Maybe next time I should look through the back of the store and peek in their trash to see if there are really any books in there.

P.S. Does the same go for hardcover books? Because it’s kind of hard to rip off a cover off for those.

Yeah i have a whole set of Little House books with the covers ripped off

Seriously? I waste my money then.

Is it like, illegal, to take discarded books with their covers ripped off? Because I think one day I’m going to go to the store and ask if I can have/save any unwanted books from mass book genocide.

Mass book genocide. I think I’ll use that exact phrasing.

“For books: the covers are ripped off and they are thrown in the trash. No joke.”

HAH! That must be why, on the inside of book covers, it says, “do not purchase this book if it has no cover, that would be illegal”! or something like that

Yes, sometimes you can get books they are going to throw away. I think only employees can do this, though.
