A question about IU sororities: sleeping porches

A friend’s daughter is freshman at IU Bloomington. This winter she plans on pariticipating in sorority rush. She mention her her father that most of the sorority house have sleeping porches.

My friend has heard of sleeping porches in older houses along the Gulf Coast, but he cannot fathom sorority houses having sleeping porches in places where there is winter … and snow … and ice … and freezing rain.

Could a member of the IU community enlighten us as to what a sleeping porches means in Bloomington.

Thank you in advance

I’m in a sorority with a “sleeping porch” which is referred to as a cold dorm at IU. They’re a regular part of the house, it’s just a separate wing with all beds that is usually kept colder than normal and the lights are always off. Don’t worry, your daughter won’t be sleeping in a porch - she’ll have a perfectly normal roof over her head. That being said, not all sororities at IU use the cold dorms.
