A question about my brother...

My brother is currently taking Honors Algebra I online as a 4th grader (he currently has a 99 in his class) and will be taking Honors Geometry next year (don’t worry, he still has ample time to watch TV and annoy me with his singing). However, his school does not offer any form of math competitions. Personally, I have been in math competitions ever since I came to America and have loved every minute of it. I believe math competitions foster critical thinking and logical structure as well as fun competitive spirit, which are important in higher level math. Does anyone know of any outside math competitions or advanced math programs available at his age, preferably free and in Connecticut? The only ones I’ve heard of are Mathcounts at the middle school level and AMC 8. Thanks for your response.

I’d suggest asking your brother’s school counselor. Or try “Googleing” it for your area.

See math olympiad for elementary and middle schools (MOEMS) [Math Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools](http://www.moems.org/)

If your brother is taking algebra and geometry, Mathcounts problems will be perfect, although he will not be able to compete officially until the 6th grade. [MATHCOUNTS Foundation - Welcome!](http://mathcounts.org)

The Art of Problem Solving fora are dedicated to mathematics for primary, secondary and college students. You will find many relevant discussions and resources there. [Art of Problem Solving](http://www.artofproblemsolving.com/)

Your brother can still take AMC 8, AMC 10, and AMC 12 if he really wants to. I believe that a 4th grader made USAMO a few years ago.
