A Question about the Essay

Hey CC! :)

I wanted to know, in the Application Essay (undergrad), should we talk mainly about the career we want to get into? For instance, I’m really into Graphic Design and computer programming. I can go on all day long about how I got inspired, and talk about what I want to do in the future with respect to coding.

Am I supposed to leave it at that, or add in extra curriculars like Basketball and my interest in Music?

Also, since I guess this counts as part of the SOP, I’ll ask this in this forum as well. How exactly do LORs work? Suppose I get three letters from three different teachers, do i send all three to all the universities I apply to? Or are there different letters for each university?

Thanks a lot :)

You can, but you certainly don’t have to. Don’t list your extracurriculars. If you’re going to talk about graphic design, don’t talk about music or basketball.

There are essay prompts for the Common Application. I believe the prompts (or at least some of them) will be new in Fall 2013, but you can see last year’s essay prompts on page 5 of last years’ Common Application here: https://www.commonapp.org/CommonApp/Docs/DownloadForms/2013/2013AppFY_download.pdf</a>. You select one of the prompts and write an essay of 250-500 words on that subject.

Generally, teachers write a letter of recommendation in support of a student’s applications to college, and send a copy of the same letter to every college or university that the student is applying to. (Sometimes if a teacher has a particular connection to a college–for example, if he is a graduate of a college that the student is applying to–he might customize a letter, but that’s not what usually happens.) Teachers can either send these recommendations electronically through the Common Application web site, or they can send them through the U.S. Mail. And generally, you won’t need 3 teacher recommendations. Many colleges and universities ask for one, and even Harvard and Yale ask for two.

@halcyonheather - Thank you!

@Sikorsky - Thanks for that!
Well I’m in India, so I’m pretty sure none of the teachers have any affiliation with colleges in the US. So maximum two? If I get my Comp Science teacher and my Principle to write it will it be alright?
