A Question for the Prep School Interviewer

I will confess to having a penchant (largely unwitting) for asking questions which are perceived as, at best, flippant, and at worst, inappropriate or even antagonistic.

I don’t think I could resist asking this question of any prep school interviewer.

“Assuming that my daughter applies, and you accept her,
I would commend unto you an extremely bright and joyful child; one who radiates a serene confidence and who loves and is loved by all who know her.
What sort of young woman are you going to return to me in four years, and why?”

If your daughter is interested in a certain subject or area of expertise (say, acting) give them a question such as, “What are your different branches of that department and what are the points you emphasize in it?” and kind of nod your head, look over their shoulder, and think of your next question.

xenon, perhaps you could ask the question in a different manner.

Or you could ask what kind of people do they cultivate there - character formation, etc.

You can’t really expect to get a full answer from a question like that. They’ll say that you’ll get a mature, intelligent, confident young woman back. This answer won’t vary much, if at all, between schools, most likely.
