A Random Question about Fabric...

My grandmother recently made me a quilt for my birthday and matching pillowcases. The quilt was made of various brightly colored fabrics. She gave me her scraps and I don’t know what to do with them. Most of the fabrics are really cool and I would love to do something with them… Other than building another quilt, can anyone give me some ideas for what to use the scraps? Most of them are about 3" wide at various lengths. Thanks

I am a quilter, scholarific…how fabulous to have this gift from your grandmother! You can sew these scraps together at random and make a nice table cover for your room. Or a simple skirt or shirt or even vest. A wall hanging might be interesting too! Good luck!

Not a sewer but I wonder if you could sew the patches all over a solid pair of curtains and customize them to “match” your quilt.

You can also get some picture frames, and use the fabric to cover the frames, or you can make a book bag- look around you, those bags are in every style imaginable;

I would make a small pillow for grandma, show her you appreciate what she has done for you and this is a way of carrying on the tradition. It doesn’t have to be perfect- two squares of the patches sewn together makng two squares, and those sewn together and stuffed!! I think she would love it!!! Or a teddy bear!!! Not that hard to do…

If you don’t have enough for curtains, make a valance and that will match your quilt. If you decide on the pillow, then get a fave pic of you and your grandmother, and transfer it to one of the squares and make that the center of your pillow.

I like boxmaker’s idea of sewing on these pieces randomly on solid curtains.

Or join them together and re-cover your existing bedroom lamp shades.

All great ideas! If you aren’t proficient with the sewing machine, you can use the scraps to decoupage a plain-jane wastebasket.

Some wonderful quilts that are real works of art:

Pillows, assorted sizes to fit the scraps?

a bag or skirt are great with scraps. i have a bag of scraps of my own left over from all of my sewing projects… i’m excited to go the quilt or skirt route with them when i have enough. the craftster.org forums might have some ideas to inspire you, too.

i like the pillow for grandma idea, too!

You could cover/create a message board or bulletin board. It would be functional and also be wall art.
