I know many of you are waiting for Otterbein decisions, so I started this thread as a little interlude. Consider it muzak for the moment…!

My daughter is now a senior at Otterbein. As many of you know, she started as a music major (vocal) and chose the BA, rather than the BM, so she could explore a double major. It quickly became apparent to her that the logistics of a second major on top of music would be difficult. At the suggestion of her advisor, the music department chair, she designed an individualized BA in “Global Music and Cultural Relations.” As the years have progressed, she has formed strong research interests in areas related to transnational feminisms, Islam, and intercultural relations; interests which have been supported and encouraged by her profs at Otterbein. As a result, she decided to apply for Ph.D programs in cultural anthropology, despite not having a formal anthro undergrad degree.

Yesterday she received an acceptance to Michigan State’s Ph.D program in cultural anthro, and if the funding comes through (it’s still being determined), she will be returning to MI and attending this fall. None of this would have been possible without the support, encouragement, time, and understanding of the Otterbein community…profs, staff, and administration.

So if any of you are wondering if the “niceness” you’ve experienced at Otterbein is real or show, I can assure you that it’s ingrained in the culture of Otterbein. And I, for one, will always be grateful for the home my daughter has had for the past four years.
