I had a H interview a few weeks ago and today I have an email from my interviewer asking me to contact another one and arrange a second interview. What can I gather from this? Most importantly, what might I have done wrong/badly/subpar last time?

I experienced something similar. My initial interview went badly -I presented myself alternately as morose, pompous intellectual, or as an insecure, whiny adolescent. I was contacted for a second interview. When this second interview was complete, the alumna confided in me that these “make-up interviews” are often reserved for canidates whom H, for whatever reason, likes, but for whom the adcoms need further substantiation.
Another possibility is that your interviewer is unable to write/submit a report to H - perhaps because of illness, etc. In this case you did not nothing “wrong” - for the second interview, just be as intelligent and engaging as you were the first time.

Hi zahra:

that’s reassuring, thanks : ).

Quick query - "these “make-up interviews” are often reserved for candidates whom H, for whatever reason, likes, but for whom the adcoms need further substantiation. " H being the H interviewer? Or is that a little too optimistic?

Yea, I feel the interview could have gone better. It wasn’t bad, just I don’t think he and I were gathering what the other was trying to say.

I hope he’s not ill : ) - he was a nice guy.

In general, “H” means the Harvard adcoms. However, “H” could mean the interviewer if, for instance, due to illness or other problem, the interviewer could not submit their report. Washington Post columnist Jay Matthews, who also interviews for Harvard, wrote a column about a time in which he felt that during the interview, he had made an inappropriate comment to the student, and so asked Harvard to arrange for another alum to also interview the student.

The most frequent situation where a second interview is called for (and I am aware of several this year, including a CC poster) is where there is an apparent “disconnect” between the initial interviewer’s assessment and the paper app as viewed in Cambridge.

Usually - although not always - the initial interviewer has raved about the candidate’s personal qualities, and perhaps picked up on strengths not adequately revealed by the file.

The second interview is a way of doublechecking to see if the first interviewer really did spot a candidate with previously unrecognized “intangible” strengths.

question: are y’all EA or RD??

Byerly - That’s an optimistic take, for sure. I doubt it in my case, but it is nice to know that it doesn’t have to mean anything bad. Thanks : )

fiesta - RD. The EA round is finished, I’m pretty sure.

alrighty, just wondering.

I had pretty much the same thing. THis summer I had an on campus interview at Harvard. When I applied I was offered another interview.
Yale was different because I had an on campus interview there and they didn’t contact me for another interview.

is an on campus interview any different than an alumni inteview? (besides location of course)

when i applied early to harvard, my admissions officer called my guidance counselor and scheduled me for a 2nd interview, this time with my adcom…actually it was my 3rd, cuz i had an on campus informational one and alumni one already…i think i came across as nervous and was deferred early…oh well…you’re most likely borderline…good luck

thanks all : )

I haven’t even had my interview yet and you had two? too cool! GOOD LUCK!

Maybe I’ll see you at Harvard next year, (or the BIGGER possibility, you’ll be there, and I’ll be at Berkeley)

a fellow californian i see! which part of cali are u from ms. pryncezz?

south cal, Garden Grove, south of L.A.

What are you majoring in?

dreamprycezz - thanks for the cheer :):). Berkeley is awesomeness. It would be excellent to get an acceptance there.
Garden Grove…! My mom lived there for a long time - she moved to Irvine last year. I go over to see her every summer.
