A Tale of Two Daughters

So Friday was one of those days as a parent you will never forget. NYU has been the dream school for my twin daughters for as long as I can remember. They both applied to TSOA with the realization that acceptance chances were low and the audition process would be highly competitive. Both were somewhat resigned to the fact that if they were not selected to Tisch they might be fortunate enough to be placed at one of the other schools at NYU. Their academic records are very similar with the only real difference being less than 200 points on the SAT.

We’ve been monitoring CC and had a pretty good idea of how things were going to unfold on Friday. We had seen the “portal” changes for D2 earlier in the week and were bracing ourselves for the email announcements that were soon to come. You can probably guess where this is headed…the day started with the early morning “wait list” email for D1 and the late afternoon acceptance email for D2…just as CC had forecasted.

The news hit our family like a ton of bricks…on one hand we were ecstatic for D2 in achieving her dream while at the same time feeling the utter disappointment of D1 having her hopes dashed. We were unable to truly celebrate the wonderful news of D2 as the setback for D1 seemed to be at the forefront of our thoughts. On one hand, we know we are fortunate in that D1 was “waitlisted” and not rejected…we just wish this process wasn’t so painful. We are hoping D1 will be considered admission off the waitlist for TSOA or Steinhardt. The process is difficult enough and we’ve come this far…I just don’t want to have to go through another day like Friday for D1. We will RSVP and hope for the best. Can anyone shed some light on the waitlist process and any suggestions on how to proceed? Are we looking at a mini-version of the admissions process all over again? What can we do to position D1 for acceptance? Thanks.

Best of luck. Sounds like a tough spot. Where else has your daughter been accepted?

Have your daughter write a letter to admissions reiterating her interest in NYU, why she is a great fit for the program, and any progress she’s made in school (academics, extracurricular, awards). Do not send extra documents that the admissions office doesn’t want.

Thanks for the advice. Do you think an email is sufficient or are you talking about a letter that is mailed?
