A Terrifying Way to Discipine Children

Has anyone else read this opinion piece in the Times?

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/09/opinion/sunday/a-terrifying-way-to-discipline-children.html?_r=1

To me, the author’s accusations are shocking. I tried to find more information about the situation and the silence from the local Lexington paper, forums and other places on the web is really surprising to me.

According to the federal govt study, this is nothing new.

I am not familiar with that particular case, but the situation in Middletown CT was in our papers several months ago. In that case it was not a closet, but a room designed for the purpose of isolation. While I agree that kids who act out may need to be removed from the immediate situation until they can calm down, it seems these rooms were used far more often than necessary - that as the author suggested, they were used as a first resort, rather than trying to resolve the issue first.

I don’t see a problem with these rooms, if used sparingly, but parents should be notified when they are used - and if the child has an IEP, us of the rood had better be covered in that IEP, or they shouldn’t use it. If a child doesn’t have an IEP, and they feel a need to use the room, perhaps they need to evaluate the child, and maybe he should have an IEP. Of course, they don’t want yet another kid declared special ed, because then they have to provide services, but you can’t have it both ways.

I don’t know what the problem is, perhaps we need more support in the classrooms?
( So that at least the adults " in charge" know they are accountable?)
