A tiny rant about "Cali" directed at noone on this board in particular but included to be helpful

Or sounds like DMZ, not so good.

When I commuted, drove me nuts that the Boston traffic reports referred to “in the downtown.” Just like that. Not in the downtown area or on downtown streets.

(I think I need that happy thread. )

@4kids4us Oh yes, Maryland, the forgotten state. Where the Maryland Redskins play.

I live an hour and a half from Philly.

I’ve never heard Cali used, but it annoys me just reading about it.

Daughter went to visit day at Berkeley and bought a cap that said “Cal”. I was confused. My husband had to explain it to me. She committed to Berkeley, we’ve been telling people she’s going to Berkeley, and she refers to it as Berkeley. I guess that will change?

You can tell where someone is from by the way they answer the following CA geography question:

How do you pronounce Cal Poly’s location?

(1) San LOO-ee Obispo
(2) San LOO-is Obispo
(3) San Loo-EES Obispo
(4) Slow
(5) Puh-MOAN-a

Either way, Cal or Berkeley would be OK with me. Not that I’m the arbiter or anything. The script Cal is one of their official logos. If you watch a football or basketball game on TV, they’ll usually refer to them as Cal or California, not Berkeley.

Berkeley is kind of long to fit on a hat. :slight_smile:

So you’re telling me you live in PA, @FlyMeToTheMoon ?

Still drives me nuts. I grew up there.

@Corbett Mostly #4 but also #3.

I call it Berkeley or Cal. I wouldn’t say “UC Berkeley” but it doesn’t irritate me. I guess UCB irritates some people.

Yes @lookingforward. Are you referring to the use of Philly? I think the AM radio station I listened to as a teen and channel 6 news used it. Didn’t they? Don’t they?

Haha. I don’t. That’s why my husband had to explain it to me.

@socalmom007 , I just looked and see the hole. I think it’s federal government property. There’s a huge veteran’s cemetery and a VA Center on that land.

DMV = Demilitarized Virginia? :wink:

2 or #4 @Corbett

People can call Berkeley “Cal” all they want, anyone who went to UCLA still thinks they’re the flagship!

@1Dreamer I’ve been trying to figure it out, that’s weird… so if you stand at the corner or Wilshire and Sepulveda- you are where???

I think this thread is the first time I have seen anyone say the food is terrible in Germany. Wife and I loved it during our many stops there. Of course, beer and any type of pork is always a winner in my view…and so many wonderful breads…

I’m guessing DC, Maryland and Virginia. Never heard it when I lived there, but that was about a million years ago.

Sorry @yearstogo I thought it was the worst food of anyplace I’ve traveled.

On the corner of Wilshire and Sepulveda. :wink:

You are in unincorporated Los Angeles County (that’s LA County, not LA City). In other words, this is a small piece of Los Angeles County that has never been “incorporated” as part of a City, even though it is surrounded by incorporated Cities. LA County (again, not LA City) is responsible for providing local government services (although it wouldn’t surprise me if LA County has an arrangement with LA City to provide such services).

There are many unincorporated “pockets” within Greater LA. In fact, most of LA County (by area) is unincorporated, because there is a vast amount of unincorporated land in the northern part of the County, surrounding the Cities of Lancaster, Palmdale, and Santa Clarita.

The unincorporated parts of LA County are shown as tinted in this map:
http://ceo.lacounty.gov/forms/lacmap.pdf

Every County in California has unincorporated areas, where the County (not a City) is responsible for providing local services. The only exception is San Francisco County; the City of San Francisco grew to fill up every part of the County, and so the two governments were merged. That’s why official documents in SF say “the City and County of San Francisco”.

@takeitallin- I first saw 805 referred to as a place by a group of young men in my town that we would see at a local beach. Many of them had it tattooed on them and they sold shirts and hats. This was about 15 years ago. Since that time I’ve noticed it become more commonplace. When the Firestone beer 805 came out you could only purchase it in the 805 area code.

@Corbett - I say #2 but a lot of people I know use #4. I went to school there.
