A tough one- halitosis

A good friend has frequent halitosis that smells chemical, not food like, not organic. Her breath smells sort of like shellac, very strong, very chemical. Over the years she has asked the doctor and been told there is nothing wrong- excellent health, great teeth & hygiene, no obvious issues.

Is anyone aware of a medication which could cause this? Cholesterol & supplements are all she has mentioned taking. It is quite a strong smell, yet not offensive in the way garlic breath might be, more like mystifying.

undiagnosed diabetes?

Nope, all her lab work is normal with high cholesterol hence the medication. But it was the knowledge of diabetics having tell tale breath that made me think it could be related to something fixable.

Which “supplements” is she taking?

Is she doing anything low-carb? Say, Atkins or South Beach? It sounds as if she may have ‘ketosis breath’. There are strips to test the levels of ketones in the body. It’s worth checking out.
