You hear a lot of other schools writing off Wharton’s undergraduate program as not a “true” liberal arts education. Is this the case? Do Wharton kids take, say, a science course, or a history course?

Also, can Wharton students pick up a second major/minor in something that Wharton doesn’t offer? Like a science major? Or an international relations major?

If you’re pursuing only a Wharton degree (called “B.S. in Economics,” regardless of concentration), you can only minor in a Wharton subject, or in one of the so-called “university minors” (interschool minors) in which Wharton participates:

So although you can take courses in liberal arts fields, you can’t technically major or minor in those fields as a Wharton undergrad. HOWEVER, you can pursue dual degrees from both Wharton and the College of Arts and Sciences (get both a BS in Econ. from Wharton and a BA from the College), and of course then major and/or minor in a liberal arts field. In fact, as stated in the quote in my post above, over 30% of Wharton undergrads graduate with more than one undergraduate degree from Penn.

Again, I’d strongly urge you to thoroughly explore that Wharton Undergrad site–you’ll find out a lot more about the program, including its requirements and limitations:

45, that is not correct. You can minor in anything in the liberal arts or any other school. It’s a “departmental minor” (see bottom of page of your link)

I’m a Wharton undergrad planning a math minor and a russian minor for example.

However, to MAJOR in a liberal arts field, the OP would still have to pursue dual degrees in both Wharton and the College (which, as I pointed out above, is done by a substantial number of Wharton undergrads).

you can do a coordinated dual degree program or you could (although I’m not sure about the logistics) do two degrees with less coordination and more classes, fulfilling requirements in both schools. I’ll defer to someone with more knowledge about the details.

I’ve seen, and heard many times, about the dual-degree programs, most notably, the Huntsman. Amazingly, our school is sending two kids to the Huntsman program this year-- two out of forty-five.

None of the dual-degrees fit me in anyway, however. I get by in my foreign language, but do NOT have the proficiency to speak in it. All the other business dual-degrees have a science degree as the second major…and science isn’t my thing.

So I guess if I do get in/go to Wharton, I’ll double major in one Wharton major and one School of Arts and Science major.

you have to take general ed classes and elective classes. Also, if you’re interested in other fields, I highly recommend you pursue a dual degree or at least a minor
