Hello! I would like to know the best school I could get into with my grades, however I would like to know my options as well. I have always had all A’s and a B or so, Until junior year, I got 1 C first semester and 3 my second semester and only a handful of A’s. I strongly think I suffered from a form of depression, I also researched it and I followed all of the symptoms. Are any of these schools in my range? I have always wanted to go to NYU (first choice), I had a college visit there in the beggining of my sophmore year. I am extremely smart and I always put in 100%, I just don’t understand what happened this past year. I have 2 AP’s for senior year and I have a gifted elective. The two carreers I am looking at are public relations, or advertising, or law. Which college would be good for that too?
Thank you for your time!
Here is the list of colleges:
CUNY Baruch
CUNY Borough Man
CUNY City College
Fashion Institute of Technology- great for PR, I believe
Fordham University- I am Catholic so this is a great school for me
Marymount Manhattn
New York University- First Choice
Pace University
St Francis College
St John’s University (NY)

My GPA is a 3.5including the C’s

What are your SATs/ACTs? Your ec’s?
Having a mediocre gpa and saying you’re smart doesn’t tell us much.

I have millions of extra curriculars for example, pals(hangout with kids with special needs), key club, NHS, speech and debate, drama, thespian society, track and field, cross country, world culture club, the musical, ex libris, FCA/FCS, my church group, junior civitan club, student government, executive board, cheerleading (competition and basketball cheering), peer mentoring, peer tutoring, worked with kids with Autism (before I moved), choir, spirit club and I think that is pretty much it. I am extremely charming and I am motivated. I havent taken the SAT or ACT yet, but I feel that I can do very well on them. Please give me your input!

CUNY is very easy to get into. It doesn’t even look at your ECs; it only cares about your transcript (GPA) and your SAT score. You will definitely get into any CUNY. However, if you apply to Macaulay Honors at a CUNY, which is basically an honors program at a CUNY school that is free and more challenging, you will need a high SAT score (2150+) and will need to submit your ECs and write an essay or two because it is a lot more competitive. If you score 2100+, you’d have a very good chance at every school you listed including NYU.

You also need to do more research. It seems like you are just putting a bunch of schools in New York on your list. St. John’s is not worth the money considering the careers you think you’d like to pursue, and schools like Pace and St. Francis College are below your range. FIT doesn’t seem to fit either; most of the people there do and major in performing and/or visual arts. Schools I think you should consider keeping on your list are NYU, Baruch (assuming you get a high SAT score, can write a good essay, and apply to Macaulay Honors), and Fordham because they are within your range.

Thank you so much for your help! My father refuses to help me! Thank you for your wise guidnce!

Are you able to afford NYU?

You might also want to go to a therapist if you truly believe you suffered depression. You might want to write your essay about it or at least a note to explain your Cs. I think a 3.5 GPA is nothing to be worried about, but more than one or two Cs is.

You want to make sure you don’t put in TOO many extracurricular on your app, otherwise the unis will think you were padding your resume.

Also, the fields if PR and Advertising are also a lot about TALENT- even if you go to a top school, if you don’t have talent for it you won’t get anywhere. If you really are as hard working as you say you are, then you could go really anywhere and still do well in the field.

Good luck!

Working with public relations is perfect for me. I would rather advertise then work for a party, then actually go. I like to make people look good. I am also going to throw a few benefits soon to raise money for children in Nicaragua, which I think could help me in my path. My depression, I had a doctor check-up a few months ago, in the middle of it all, and I broke down in the office. The doctor suggested that I did see a therapist, but my father said I was fine. He thinks that it is in my head. Thank you, and in the applications I have put online, I only put about 5 tops including sports and my top EC’s.
Thank you
