A* ??

I’ve been hearing this thing that you can get an A*, which is higher than A. What’s up with this?

No. But there are S* when you’re taking pass/fail though they’re rarely used.

When will people nip this in the bud? A-HD and S-HD (or DISTA/DISTS in bannerland) should NEVER be written as A* or S* - it causes confusion. Asterisks are reserved for when a class is mandatory S/NC - you get an S*

In rare form, modest is wrong. I’m surprised! Maybe he just always assumed it to be rumor but it’s not. The High-Distinction grades exist for both A’s and S’s. In olden times you couldn’t see your distinctions - you would have to go to the Registrar’s office and actually ask about them. They would look them up in some book, and it was all quite silly. Now that we have Banner, you can actually see them on your internal transcript.

Whether you get A-HD’s depends largely on what professors you end up with, and what department you’re in. For example, I got an A-HD in each of the intro neuro classes I’ve taken. All in all, I’d say they’re not actually that rare, at least in my experience. I have 7 A-HD’s and 2 S-HD’s.

FYI, distinctions are never put on external transcripts.

I saw this example of a resume on the brown website somewhere (bio section i think?) where it said to write dist_As as honors/awards

Would you consider this appropriate generally?

I would love to put my distinctions on my resume, but I’ve always assumed that it’s bad form. I’d love to see the link you’re referencing, though.

here it be
[RESUME WORKSHEET (Please us in conjunction with NOTES that follow)](<a href=“The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University”>The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University)

Interesting. I think I’m going to label that as pre-med resume padding, but maybe I should consider adding them to my resume.
