DD has a car on campus about two hours from home. We are considering AAA Classic membership for her. Has anyone had any experience with them? Does it really work as slick as they say if she has a flat tire, runs out of gas, needs a jump, etc, etc? (Yes, she knows how to change a tire but just in case!)

We have AAA and we love it. I have locked my keys in my car, had a flat tire, battery died, etc and they’re always there in less than a half hour with very little (if any) red tape. They usually use outside people that are very close to where you’re at and I’ve really never had a problem.

At least in Michigan, they’re wonderful in my experience!

I have CAA the Canadian equivalent and my D goes to college in the States. Yes it does work well but again it is all relative because if they are very busy or if you are in the middle of nowhere then it may a bit longer. My D has had to call them once as her battery died and they told her straight up that it would be 45 minutes to an hour. They were there in about 50 minutes took 10 minutes to decided her battery was dead, towed her to the nearest garage and she had a new one put it. The cost was the battery. Yes it is well worth it even if it is just for your own peace of mind.

We’ve got AAA for all the cars in the family, and a membership is my gift to my children when they buy their first car. Yes, you just call the number and they send someone out - I’ve waited as little as 5 minutes for them to show and as much as an hour…but someone does eventually appear. Particularly for someone who is not “car smart,” it’s a great service.

We wouldn’t go without AAA, membership is a must-have for this family.

We have AAA for the female members of the household. One downside is that it seems that they’re invariably slow to respond for one ‘unusual’ reason or another, pretty much every time, and this is with our experience as well as a few others I was involved with.

You might want to check other car rescue services as well - ones that come free with a new car purchase, ones that might be available through your car insurance company or with a credit card.

I love having AAA, and it’s saved me several times - keys locked in car, dead battery, flat tires, and one breakdown on the interstate. It makes me feel much better about young drivers on the road, knowing that they have it.

You might want to consider upgrading (which I did after my interstate incident) so that you can get a tow for a greater distance. If DD had a breakdown near school for example, you could get it towed to your hometown garage for no charge.

Get it. Worth it in the keys locked in car situations alone!

Well worth it. Lots of peace of mind (for Mom!) Be sure to also check out AAA discounts. My D has used on hotels, outlet shopping, Geek Squad, Subway, etc.

We are long-time AAA members and it has come in handy over and over. My battery died recently and they actually sent a battery specialist who was able to bring a new battery and replace it right there for a competitive price.
One other benefit that is not widely known is that a lot of hotels give a AAA discount to members as well, just check their on-line reservation “special rate” section, usually it is the same rate given to AARP members. Our local AAA office also has a DMV extension for title transfers and driver’s license renewals. That also comes in pretty handy for avoiding the California DMV offices, which are a nightmare!

We have it. D has it at school. If your D is in school in another state look at the cost in each state. The price does vary by state.

We have ‘AAA’ type coverage for free from the auto manufacturer for 5 years from purchase date…they have been prompt on the few times we have needed them

Do check with your car insurance. It may have AAA-type coverage included or available.

We have AAA, and need to add Happykid to the plan when it renews in June. I have used it more for the travel benefits than for car issues in recent years, but our AAA branch sends out emails offering car-care discounts at some of the registered garages that I may take them up on one of these days.

I love AAA. They’ve bailed me out on numerous occasions. I wouldn’t be without it. You also get discounts with it – e.g., on train tickets, hotels, other stuff.

Add me to the happy customer list. They usually take 45 minutes to respond to keys locked in car or flat tires, but recently I stalled in the middle of a busy intersection. They arrived in within 10 minutes. I stayed in two different hotels last week, a Sheraton and a Marriott. Both offered room discounts AND a full breakfast, as part of the AAA/CAA package.

We had AAA for years and they were great. The only reason we don’t have it anymore is because a similar service is now included with our auto insurance. If I had a choice I would rather they charge me less for the insurance and not include it so I could go back to AAA.

The other nice thing about AAA is that the driver is covered, not the car. So if your D is driving a friends car or a rental car she is still covered. You might want to consider the plus service because the towing mileage included is much better. Since the plus includes more mileage for towing, if you need to be towed and are further from home, they can still take you to a station close to your house
