this is a side bar, but i am not sure if people realize that prior to the prescription drug legislation medicare covered absolutely nothing for prescriptions. people may not agree with the law that was drafted, but it’s helping millions of people with their rx’s. sure they still, have co pays and may have deductibles and a gap, which may be different then employer coverage, but it’s better then having absolutely 0 coverage for rx prior to the rx program went into place.

No expert here on their politics, but they do a good job of discussing the concerns associated with aging in their magazine, with intelligence and compassion. Membership is cheap.

I get more of a discount with joining the hotel chains preferred member thing, than with AARP. I read their magazine at the Drs though.

We have both also. Discounts are similar but sometimes AARP is easier use. Literature and website have some useful info.

P+++++++++++

I don’t get the comparison with AAA. We have a phenomenal discount on car and home insurance through AAA, but that’s not why I would/should join AARP.

Their supplemental health coverage has been amazing for my 80+ y.o. mom- two major surgeries last year, no co-payment agonies, plus a few related side bennies.

Btw, about the magazine. After years of visiting Grandma ad reading the local retirement city newspapers and community rags- and all the silliness and alarmism- I found the AARP mags interesting and informative.

This is a timely thread. We already have AAA and plan to keep it. But I got an AARP invite and am interested in what extra benefits/discount it would buy us.

We have both. Thanks to AARP, I get a free donut at Dunkin’ Donuts when I buy a large or extra large coffee. DH likes coffee, and I like toasted coconut donuts. Life is good!

We both joined when DH turned 50. Have never used any discounts; I always forget about them. The reason we’re members is to support the lobby that supports us and our aging parents.

Mmmmmmmmmm.
Toasted coconut donut fan here too! I only just learned of this incredible benefit and will make sure I remember it when DH begs to stop at DD at least 3 times a week for coffee.

LOL - I just came back MA, which must be the land of Dunkin Donuts. Would the AARP free donut work at Logan airport?

I can’t stand them. If you have AAA, you get all the discounts.

We also hold both AAA and AARP memberships. Pros have been mentioned already: the discounts on some things (hotel recently) are better with AARP and the lobbying arm is a plus. A con is that you get on a mailing list for sales of insurance products and other stuff…but AAA sends a lot of junk mail too.

I have had AARP for quite some time, but havent renewed it this go round. Still thinking about it and still getting emails from them…

H LOVES his free donut at DD…

AARP members here … use the discounts a fair amount … the insurance also looks pretty competitive. AARP’s resistance to road testing of older drivers drives me CRAZY … if they are going to take that stance then they ought to present a pragmatic alternative (and making every driver be retested is not a pragmatic alternative)

If you are old enough to get mailings from AARP, you are old enough for the senior coffee discount at McDonald’s.

No–age 50 for AARP membership, age 55 for McDonald’s SR coffee (had a bday party for my BIL there when he turned 55 & was finally qualified for SR coffee). McD does not “card” though & I ordered it for H because he was over 55 (though I was not at the time).

I think you get senior discount at Ihop @55.

Remember to get your Golden Pass at age 65, which is only $10 and gets you into nearly all national parks and monuments at no additional charge. If the charge is per car, everyone in the car can also get in at no charge! This is one of the best bargains and it never expires (though we have lost ours & have to repurchase–still a bargain).

Love the idea of a McD bday party at 55!
Thank you all for the discount info. I love IHOP and Mc D’s coffee. And can handle a free donut. And use that Golden Pass. Oops, not the GP yet.
