Aarp

Yes, it makes me sound old to be thinking of joinging the American Assoc of Retired Persons. Has anyone else here joined?? Its not expensive, but I wonder if I’d use any of the benefits, or if they are really of benefit after all. Pros and Cons??

thanks!

My H and I are members of AARP. He is old enough, I am not but can use the benefits since he is a member.

We just got 10% off of our restaurant lunch out today. And, H always get special coupons spit back out at him at Walgreens when he remembers to swipe his card there. The coupons are based on what he bought to use on future purchases.

It more than pays for itself if you remember to ask everywhere you go if they take it, then use it at those places that take it.

They ticked me off because they started sending me stuff while I was in my 40s. However, I am easily bought. I joined at 51 and it has more than paid for itself in reduced hotel rates.

Ditto, ditto, ditto. I even bought some of their life insurance for DH, who is otherwise uninsurable.

H & I belong. We just got a great deal on a Budget truck to move our D. We got 20% on a one-way rental, plus we got their best collision-damage coverage for just $10/day. Since car insurance does not typically cover truck rentals, the coverage was a must (and was normally $30/day).

As insulted as I was when the cashier at the movies offered me the senior ticket, the discount was enticing…

I’ve routinely pitched the envelopes so far. If you already have something like AAA, is there still a benefit with AARP?

Not a big fan of their politics, as I don’t have much in common with retired 80yo who didn’t plan for their retirement.

Get the same discounts with AAA, who will tow my car if needed.

Are you a fan of the 80 year old who worked her entire life, raised 5 kids and is barely able to make ends meet?

We went with AAA. It’s been a good decision. YMMV.

just saying AARP’s political positions are not in agreement with mine.

My younger d who turned 24 this past weekend, Class of 2010 just received an AARP invitation to join in the mail…since she doesn’t yet have a full-time job/career, we enjoyed the invitation and put it with her birthday things…

you can certainly get hotel discounts through aaa and your car towed, but aarp has better all around discounts and is only 16 a year instead of whatever the price of aaa is. if you are in need of health insurance after age 65, they contract with some of the best.

^ Yeah, but if you’ve got a D stuck on the NJ Turnpike with a flat tire, AARP isn’t all that helpful.

fairly sure the 16 for a year membership for discounts plus the what 15-20 a year for towing included in car insurance is cheaper then aaa’s yearly price. Not knocking those who have it… just think the same benefits can be had for less.

No way. No way (sufficient words required).

I just joined,

And wow, dissing 80 year olds? Who didn’t plan for retirement? Many did plan but life throws curve balls

I can’t imagine not having empathy for older people.

My brother joined instead of AAA (his cars are much newer than ours). So far, have found the AAA discounts to be good for us & buy us peace of mind for our kids with their old cars & us with ours. When we switch to newer cars, we MAY think about switching to AARP instead.

I’m not a fan of their politics either, especially the prescription drug legislation, but don’t really want to get into politics. That is one of the reasons am not a member. Their premise is basically that they represent HEALTHY older folks, not folks who have medical issues, etc.

One GREAT thing AAA offers in SoCal is DMV services near D’s campus. That is worth a lot of reduced aggravation–for S & now for D. They have a joint membership. H & I have a joint membership as well.

We have both AAA and AARP. Some hotel chains have a better AAA discount than AARP, while others have the opposite.

We also have both. AARP has other travel discounts as well such as car rental.
