There is a list of 62 “top research universities” here: [Association of American Universities](http://www.aau.edu/about/article.aspx?id=5474). Membership in AAU is by invitation, and members can also be voted out (e.g. University of Nebraska). This could be a starting point or alternative to those looking for “public ivies” or “elite” private schools.

And a list of 66 top liberal arts colleges here: [Member Institutions | Consortium of Liberal Arts Colleges](Institutions Archive - Consortium of Liberal Arts Colleges). Membership in the CLAC is limited to 66 schools and it appears to have started as a lobbying arm like AAU, although now it seems to focus on IT concerns. But if you look at the list, it does appear to include mostly high-ranked LACs. Again, this could be a starting point in looking for “elite” LACs.

They are not perfect. For example, Dartmouth is not on either list. But we always have the USNWR rankings for hair-splitting purposes.
