This will allow law schools to admit without any objective data points.
So logically what’s next, eliminate the bar exam?! There are already too many law schools and law school graduates carrying huge debt. This creates a whole industry of trash lawsuits to generate fees.
According to the logic being used, if there is a difference in scores based upon race, then the test is patently racist. So yes, I suspect that the next thing to go would be the bar exam (and in medicine, the board exams).
This is a really bad idea. As it is, there are far too many law schools and law school graduates in this country. The ABA should be tightening, not loosening the standards for admission to law school.
Quite frankly, the States should also be tightening up the requirements for getting a license to practice law. I can’t tell you how many idiots I have seen in the courtroom who have not only graduated from law school but have passed our State’s bar exam; but who fail to display even a minimum comprehension of applicable law, or how to advocate effectively for their clients.
All this does is drive more students to the lower tier law schools- which already have huge issues getting their students to pass the bar, whether in the state where the student studied or elsewhere. Which then drives more students to jobs which do not require bar admission (i.e. paralegal, some doc review, admissions and alumni relations roles in law schools).
The top and middle tier of law schools have zero interest in widening the pipeline.
It’s happening in medical schools too:
This article doesn’t mention candidates having been admitted without MCAT scores. As of now, I don’t think that there are any US med schools that don’t still require the MCAT. However, due to the need for doctors with whom minority patients are comfortable, there is no question that medical schools set the bar for admission lower for URM applicants. Once there, they have to perform, and if they cannot, despite extra support and the option to repeat failed years, they are counseled out.
Aside from that, this article sounds as if it’s not from a reputable source.
