I recently decided to switch my major to computer engineering. I currently attend Hofstra University and it is not ABET accredited for computer engineering. Does ABET necessarily matter for this major? In comparing the classes to SUNY Stony Brook, the classes look relatively similar. I like Hofstra and do not want to transfer but if it’s necessary I will.

Accreditation is absolutely vital. Do not mess around with unaccredited degree programs.

That being said, it’s possible that if this were a new degree program at Hofstra, and the school hasn’t yet graduated any CE students, the accreditation might be pending. In other words, in order for a school to acquire accreditation for a new degree program, they need to graduate students in that particular degree program. As a student, there are big risks choosing a degree program with pending accreditation, however, if the school has a good reputation, and they don’t have a history of accreditation problems, there shouldn’t be any issues.

But yes, accreditation is necessary if you wish to be able to use your degree after graduation.

Just go with Stony Brook. It’s ABET accreddited, and given that you will have to take CS courses, Stony Brook’s CS program is not on the same level as Hofstras.
