Just wondering if I go to Cornell in 2015, would I be able to participate in this program?

My understanding of the program is that it’s not really something you sign up and choose to participate in; rather, it’s a new way of teaching at Cornell. With the grant, Cornell is hoping to combine community involvement with education. I believe that with the new initiative, there will be different programs and events that you can sign up for as they happen. Sombeody correct me if I’m wrong, but that was my understanding.

@Ranza123 what specifically does the “10-year initiative to establish community engagement” part mean? isn’t it an ongoing program?

Yes, it’s an ongoing program, but not one you sign up for. It’s something cornell is going to be implementing in the next ten years so that by 2025, students are graduating with a greater sense of community and community involvement.

So it starts this year?

Yes I believe so.

You may be referring to The Center for Engagement & Research: http://www.elr.cornell.edu/about-us/our-history My D has worked there for the past 3 years. She went there to volunteer & they ended up offering her a job. She did a summer internship in NYC through their Urban Scholars program & has worked mainly securing speakers for their programs. She has really enjoyed her time there.

@csdad thank you! Is the “engaged learning & research” a program?

It is a physical center that sponsors programs for the college & community. My D works about 10 hours a week. Her main responsibility is to secure speakers for their coffee hours. Her is an overview of their programs:
