About Goldwater-college level research award?

I’m planning a major of Biology(or related), pr-Med at Rice. Can someone tell me more about Texas Medical Center? Students got Goldwater award at Rice? Thanks!!!

The TMC is right across the street, and Rice has cultivated great relationships with many of the institutions over there. Through the Century Scholars research program, I’m doing research with a professor at the UT Houston Health Science Center, and we visited Hermann Memorial (a hospital in the TMC) earlier this afternoon. There are TONS of internships, fellowships, research opportunities, shadowing opportunities, etc. available at the TMC and Rice students definitely take advantage of this.

The Goldwater is an opportunity available through the Office of Undergraduate Fellowships and Research, I believe. You can go to their website for more info. I’m pretty sure you have to be a sophomore or junior to apply for it, but there are tons of research opportunities available for freshmen.

You have to be nominated by someone at Rice to apply for the Goldwater scholarship. Two people received the award in 2007 from Rice:

Here’s a link to all of the scholarships you can apply for, once you’re at Rice:

For the Goldwater, you first need to compete amongst Rice students, and be one of four selected. Usually, this is the toughest part, but since you’re in life sciences it should be relatively easier than in something like math or statistics. However, Goldwater is typically looking for PhD students, so if you’re decidedly pre-med (and not MD/PhD), it may be tough to secure a nomination.

Once you’re nominated by your school, chances of getting the actual scholarship are pretty high. I think Rice has had at least 3/4 for a long time. Lastly, although sophomores are eligible for Goldwater, they usually aren’t selected by Rice, since juniors have historically had a much better chance of getting it.
